IT managers have been accused of ignoring green issues after a new survey from international consultancy group Morse revealed that 89 percent of businesses have no idea how much energy the IT department uses.
According to VMware, for every server virtualized, customers can save about 7,000 kilowatt hours, or four tons of CO2 emissions, every year. (VMware said it got the figures by using the average electricity consumption of servers and multiplying it using industry standard metrics.)
Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are rapidly embracing networked storage, to the point where low-end systems -- priced under US$15,000 -- accounted for a majority of growth in this area, IDC said. Virtualization has proved so useful for boosting efficiency and easing management that it's moved beyond traditional server workloads to include functions such as firewalling, intrusion prevention and now WAN acceleration, Whiteley said. Certeon's move may help break the constraints of cost and complexity that have forced enterprises to limit WAN acceleration to just a few key locations, he said.
