Duration of ownership: 1 Weeks
Strengths: Small/portable, built-in Mic port, great sound, easy installation
Weaknesses:None at the moment
Overall Evaluation: Before I owned this, I saw a demo of the item in a Mac User Group meeting and couldn't believe how good it was. No drivers had to be installed since everything was built-in in the OS. Additionally, recording through the iMic sounded a little better (not significantly, but it sure sounded slightly clearer) than on the built-in port on the G5 at the MUG meeting. I have to say that I have only owned this thing for about a week and the sound out of this thing sounds great compared to my headphone port on my iBook G4. All I had to do was plug it in, configure the System Preferences to use it and it works. Also, I really like the addition of the microphone port because this iBook lacks one for some odd reason. Now I can actually get something decent in GarageBand. A tip before purchasing this: do not connect this to an unpowered hub. It must be connected to the built-in USB port on the computer or an AC-powered hub. Otherwise, the device may not work properly or not at all. I have not tested this device on a PC but according to the Griffin website, this only works well with WinXP. It doesn't work on Win95/98 and only records with certain applications on Win98SE/2000. Other than that, this thing kicks butt!

Strengths: Much better/noiseless connection versus the built-in headphone jack on my PowerBook. Excellent sound quality. Microphone jack. No software needed.
Weaknesses:Could use RCA left/right inputs/outputs. Could be smaller given no such inputs/outputs.
Overall Evaluation: The iMic has always performed well for me. I haven't extensively used the microphone jack, but I have used the input jack for a long time in both in home and now car environments (now that I have a car stereo with an auxiliary input). It particularly shines in the car - if I use my PowerBook's built-in headphone jack I get a shaky/crackly connection as things move around and vibrate, while I get a consistent and solid connection when going through the iMic. In combination with the Mac OS X shareware software "Detour" I can automatically pipe audio programs such as iTunes and DVD Player through the iMic (and thus to my stereo) at full volume (effectively line level), while sending everything else through the built-in speakers at the system volume, without having to touch anything. The iMic is a product that gets more useful with time. I'd like a version that included RCA in & out jacks, but not an amplifier (i.e. a PowerWave without the amplifier and speaker breakouts). In addition it would be good to have a smaller version of the current iMic to make it a bit more portable. In any case this is a great product as is. Indeed I'm buying a second one so that I can permanently have one in my car.

Strengths: In theory, it looks like a great gadget.
Weaknesses:It does not work and Griffin does not reply to emails to customer service.
Overall Evaluation: After carefully following all directions, it was impossible to hear sound on the PB G4 using iMic. I put out a notice in the RIMUG group asking if anyone had a tip on how to make it work. One person replied that he had bought it but he could never get the sound from his computer.
