    Duration of ownership: 1 Months

    Strengths: Price

    Weaknesses:None

Overall Evaluation: Great value for a 250 GB hard drive. I use Windows XP SP1 and had no problems installing and using this drive - it requires no additional software or drivers. It requires power and comes with a supplied power cable. It also comes preformatted as FAT32. I reformatted it to NTFS without any issues and this took about 1.5 hours to complete. It works perfect it lies on my desk behind my laptop and most times i don't even notice that it is running. It's fast and looks nice. I think it's a great product for it's price.Media card slots are very useful. It can read all of the common used memory cards.

    Strengths: All in one, relaible

    Weaknesses:None

Overall Evaluation: It includes both USB 2.0 and FireWire interfaces as well as a USB 2.0 hub and media reader for mostly used cards. It has conveniently placed buttons for easy backup. You simply push a button and the drive backs up your computer. It is compact and very quiet.I use my WD drive to store all my movies and mp3s. Formatted available space is around 230 GB.Only problem I noticed is in order to shut the drive off, you have to hold the power button down for about five seconds.I highly recommend it.

Strengths: Nice feature set; USB hub; decent warranty; USB & Firewire

    Weaknesses:Big and ugly

Overall Evaluation: I was looking for an external hard drive that had a USB hub built in. I was running out of USB ports, so wanted to add the drive, yet not use up any ports. This did the trick: one on front, and one on back. Plus, you get the firewire as an added bonus. However, note that if you use firewire, the usb hub will *not* be available! I like the built-in card reader. It works with my two sets of cards: compact flash & secure digital. But keep in mind that with so many formats out there, yours may not be compatible. Be sure and look ahead of time! It comes pre-formatted in FAT32, which they do in order to be Mac/PC compatible. Me being a PC guy, formatted it for NTFS. I have not used any of the software, so cannot comment. This thing is big and noisy, and darnet, ugly!! Oh well, as long as it works. I probably should have gotten the 250GB version instead, but I'll live with this for the time being. Only comes with a one-year warranty, which seems to be standard for external hard drives these days.

    Duration of ownership: 5 Weeks

Strengths: 7200 rpm, 8 meg cache, card reader, firewire, usb hub

    Weaknesses:NONE

Overall Evaluation: Its big but its got everything you would want in an external drive. There is no fan so noise is not an issue. There is an off on button and 2 buttons for data backup using the included software. The package comes will the cables you will need and the software as well. You can use the drive to download your information through the usb connections and the card reader section.

    Duration of ownership: 6 Days

Strengths: usb 2 and firewire, external card reader (8 types) backup software, sturdy case, fanless

    Weaknesses:weight and size

Overall Evaluation: I was waiting for this unit to come down in price and finally it hit my price target. Awesome drive. large enough to store my data and pictures and features the card reader that allows me directly download data and pictures by way of usb drive and the various cards I use for photos and music (allowing me to get rid of some of the cables on my desk). Has direct button backup (2 for different backup regimes) and comes with the western digital version of the dantz software which while not terribly easy to use, is very useful once you figure it out. The kit comes with usb and firewire cables which is unusual sometimes but welcome and the powerbrick and software and a stand for the drive. You must use the usb connection to your computer to use the card reader so if you use the firewire for the data you will have 2 cables connected to your laptop or desktop. Good product at a good price. Would pay up to $100 for this. Drive is worth around $60 and the case is worth around $40.
