Netgear SC101 Storage Central

Duration of ownership: 7 Months
Strengths: Auromatic scheduled backups
Weaknesses:Proprietary format of the media in the SC101
Overall Evaluation: My SC101 was set up with two drives. My two windows XP systems used Smartsync Pro that came with the SC101 to automatically synchronize my files to the SC101 on a daily basis. Each Windows XP system attached to its own drive inside the SC101. When one of my PC drives crashed, all I had to do was reinstall Windows XP, download the Storage Central Manager from Netgear, attach my new XP PC to the SC101 and copy all my files and programs back to the new hard drive. One of the smarter things I did was to set the Smart Sync Pro to synchronize daily. Retrospect didn't do what I wanted so register the Smart Sync that comes with the SC101. Even if you loose the key, Netgear will send you another when you need it.

Strengths: Inexpense
Weaknesses:Works very slowly. Often doesn't work at all. I can't get this working with all my machines.
Overall Evaluation: Don't buy this. It is a waste of money. I spent months trying to get this to work properly. The software that comes with it is bad as well.

Strengths: With the addition of ready mix it makes a good door stop.
Weaknesses:Not compatible with lots of other software and hard drives.
Overall Evaluation: Initially it appeared to work fine. I have been satisfied with other Netgear products but not the SC101 Storage Central. This product suffers from a multitude of hardware and software design deficiencies. I bought two of these things and they are garbage. I have a great deal of computer experience yet the SC101 cost me hundreds of man hours. They initially worked ok, but later started sucking lots of CPU time, 30-40% or more. Because of the delay in their causing problems I thought I had an infected computer. I spent months on and off trying to find the problem. I opened task manager hundreds of times trying to identify the problem. Then I started looking for an infection. I thought that the virus checker may have missed a new bug. I scanned with a multitude of software packages, and purchased a few. I did multiple scandisk and defrag. I did the same for the registry.I then started uninstalling applications, and when I got rid of the SC101 my problems went away!Hundreds of wasted man hours. Not just in excising the problem, but in lower productivity because of the poor computer response time. DO NOT BUY THE NETGEAR SC101 STORAGE CENTRAL - - It sucks, Netgear Sucks for foisting this garbage on us! It would be an understatement to say that I am pissed at Netgear. I will be boycotting ALL Netgear products for some time to express my displeasure over the $200 wasted on the product and the THOUSANDS of dollars in lost productivity!

Overall Evaluation: I'm running a mixed array of machines at home (Linux, Macs and one Windows machine). The Macs and the Linux machines were completely unable to connect to this box since it runs on a proprietary protocol that is only supported for Windows. If you want a NAS device that everybody can talk to, this is not it!

Duration of ownership: 1 Weeks
Strengths: gives you something to do with your old HDs
Weaknesses:slow, unreliable backups
Overall Evaluation: Tried a 40GB backup using Retrospect 7.5 (which does a full compressed back to another PC on the network in about 5 hours), and the first run took 12 hours and failed because of a corrupt header; second attempt without compression ran at 54 MB/min, took about 9 hours but had 40 errors in verifying files (that hadn't changed between backup and verify - bad MD5 checksums on some data files for instance.) I wouldn't trust this with my data - as far as I'm concerned it's a boat anchor (ok, very small boats...)
