Strengths: quiet, doesn't get too hot.
Weaknesses:small cache, average (for 2006) size, not very high quality
Overall Evaluation: The SP1604N drive came in a computer I bought. I was impressed by how quiet it was, that it seemed to stay cool even under the kind of conditions we have here in Florida, and the size was pretty good for my requirements.Because of the small cache size, I decided to get another drive, a WD 160GB, to store my data on...some of my research involved files that are well over 1GB and there was noticable lag with the Samsung drive. I soon became VERY glad that I'd bought the WD drive because the Samsung failed. It just decided to die...it was working fine in the morning, and by that evening CHKDSK was showing tons of bad sectors.I contacted Samsung support, not an easy task given how badly their website is organized, and they gave me a RMA authorization. I sent the drive back, and received a replacement in a couple weeks. I formatted it, partitioned it, reinstalled my operating system (all the while thanking my lucky stars that I'd had my data on the WD drive), and started getting everything back to the way I wanted it. Within two weeks, TWO WEEKS, the "new" drive has failed. It suddenly started making 'ticking' sounds and reporting read/write errors. So now I've lost my operating system and all the custom settings twice in the past month. This is not acceptable. I will RMA this disk, but I'm going to pick up another WD or a Seagate to be my primary, system drive and I'll use the next replacement Samsung as merely backup for stuff I write on DVD...there is NO WAY I would put anything on a Samsung drive that I couldn't replace.

Strengths: Fast seek time and large 106GB capacity, realatively quiet
Weaknesses:Not the fastest or the biggest out there
Overall Evaluation: Definately a Best Buy for the Buck.!! For the price of many 120 GB drives you geta bonus 40 GB free. ALso many of those drives are not a 7200 rpm drive such as this one. This is my second Smasung HD and I would recommend to anyone looking to upgrade or build fromscratch (who does that anymore?)

Strengths: Great price and it is a good solid hard drive that holds a great ammount of data. Has a 3 year warrentey which is nice in the 90 days to fail world.
Weaknesses:It does not come with a mirgration utility, so if you don't want to format you current hard drive you are stuck unless you are willing to spend $70 for Norton Goast. Thesupport site is hard to use.
Overall Evaluation: We all remember the days when our 5GB hard drive was more than enough space for our games. But now in the world of 3GB games and 10GB Linux OS's you just need more space. That is what the SP1604N gives you 160GB of wonderful space. This drive is ideal if you want to play alot of games or do graphic or video editing. I brought mine from Newegg.com and it came OEM with a plain white box and only a small install guide.
