  Duration of ownership:

  Strengths: Excellent clarity, deep bass, impressive volume range, very portable, and perhaps most importantly includes two inputs from two different sources

  Weaknesses:There probably would be no difference otherwise but the speaker input and wires did not come gold plated

  Overall Evaluation: I bought these speakers to replace a set of entry level 2.0 speakers on a multimedia computer, and also for use to achieve the best sound quality possible for classic 1993s-1998 gaming. A Bose Companion 3 would be my first choice, but at triple the price of the Companion 2, making it on par price wise with the high end consumer 5.1 speakers (e.g. Logitech Z-5500s, Klipch Promedia, Creative Gigaworks).. was not what I was willing to spend at the moment. And because older formats of music (MIDI, Adlib) and the soundtracks from these old games hardly use the bass frequencies getting the Companion 2s, which already have great bass, this would be the logical choice. However, the 2s will be a stepping stone and I do plan to purchase the Companion 3s in the future.It comes well packaged, well-documented (detailed manual), and easy to install. I was disappointed that Bose didn't choose to use gold plating for such high caliber of speakers, unlike Creative's 2.0 and 2.1 speaker options.I tried some different music on it to see how it sounded. Vocals from Evanescence were pristine, incredibly clear no matter what volume, rock songs had the texture of the guitar and the filter/distortion perfectly preserved, classical music of course sounded as if the music had a soul, electronic dance music (trance) had great bass for 2.0s. Then I tried some music from old games like Doom I, Crusader, Diablo I, Duke Nukem, Raptor, Tyrian, and wow, these speakers brought otherwise dull, simple, bland MIDI and Digital SoundBlaster synthesizer music to life, and simply made the music more enjoyable.[Hint: try out FFVIII soundtrack]I believe the best distinguishing feature of these speakers are the two inputs it includes (four connectors, 2 Right, 2 Left). Applying this to older games, you could effectively mute the sometimes boring or cacophonic music and connect a CD/MD/MP3 player to the speakers and be your own mood creator for whatever game you are playing; you could play a song that sounds better instead of having to listen to the in-game music. Then the beauty of it is, you could change tracks quickly on your MP3 player when the level changes, where you move to a different area, or when the in-game music changes. But this is just one way you can use the inputs; there are infinite possibilities.[9.5 out of 10]
