Finally, a network music player that looks as good as it sounds! Roku SoundBridge plays your PC or Mac digital music files anywhere in the house ? connecting your stereo or powered speakers to your computer?s digital music library. Or, listen to a variety of Internet Radio stations, without even turning on your computer. WMA, MP3, AAC, AIFF and WAV music formats are supported ? and it's network ready with wired Ethernet or Wi-Fi. A large, bright display; Apple Rendezvous? and iTunes?* support; and Windows? Media Connect, Windows Media Player 10 and Windows Media DRM 10 support make the SoundBridge the most compatible music player around.Roku has recently switched factories for the production of its SoundBridge M1000 and redesigned it to streamline manufacturing. The two versions are equivalent and interchangeable. The main user visible difference between the two is that the newer M1000 has its jacks on the back of the unit; whereas the original M1000 has its jacks out the sides. The new unit?s end caps are not removable; the originals are. The original M1000 used a Compact Flash style Wi-Fi card; whereas the newer M1000 has the Wi-Fi built onto the main board. Overall, neither model is ?better? than the other. The newer M1000 can be identified by the jacks on the back, or by its model number sticker which has the number M1001. The M1000 spec sheet on our web site has been updated to reflect these changes. Roku will not swap one for the other as they are equivalent

Duration of ownership: 2 Months

Strengths: Ease of use

Weaknesses:None noted

Overall Evaluation: Have been using the Roku now for two months. Set up was easy -- and it was "plug it in & start playing" -- if you followed the directions. Maybe someday someone will come up with something that is truely "plug it in and play it" without directions, but this one is close. Sound quality is great with stuff that I have loaded on the computer and the webradio portion is acceptable although depending on the station, scratchy at time. Overall an excellent product.

Strengths: Works well until it bricks after about 2 years.

Weaknesses:Quality control

Overall Evaluation: I have owned 2 Soundbridges. The M500 display failed after about 1.5 years. The M1001 I purchased as a replacement worked well for 2 years until its power supply failed yesterday. Completely bricking the unit. Yes, I tried other outlets, etc. Dead M1001. I will have to replace this since I have hundreds of CDs being served over the home WiFi system but it's a sad prospect to think of paying out another $150 for a product that demonstrates poor quality control.

Duration of ownership: 1 Weeks

Strengths: Automatic software update, digital/optical output, multiple media server support, Internet radio, good looking, reasonably priced.

Weaknesses:Noise introduced due to new hardware design change from earlier version

Overall Evaluation: Overall speaking, a very good wired/wireless digital music player with support to some Asian languages in MP3 tags, which was the main reason why I upgraded from the wonderful Roku M500 model. The bad thing is, if you search the Internet for the noise issue due to the new hardware redesign, you can see a lot of people complaining about the noise introduced to this model on all outputs because of resampling, which makes such a good functional music player unacceptable to the audiophile crowd. The bottomline is, this model is still probably the best compromise currently if you consider the price, function and the continuous vendor support.

Duration of ownership: 1 Years

Strengths: Open to virtually unlimited internet stations.Works seemlessly with iTunes and Rhapsody (even at the same time). Great sound quality

Weaknesses:Only wireless B, should be upgraded. We don't have any signal issues though.

Overall Evaluation: I've just bought another unit for our second floor after a trouble free year of using the first. Great for parties - make a playlist and you are done for the evening. I have two Roku units, often running at the same time. One playing children's stories from iTunes for my kid and another playing music from Rhapsody or the internet on another floor. Very easy to set up, good security features. Firmware updates are self prompted and easy to install. The new internet portal is great for managing the internet favorites. Couldn't recommend the Roku more.

Strengths: A great, seamless interface to your music library

Weaknesses:wireless use is buggy, setup takes some patience

Overall Evaluation: Before you buy -- make sure to review the list of wireless routers and their performance ratings. My original router was listed as "poor" and they weren't kidding... upgrading to a recommended model resulted in very good performance.Out of the box, learning to navigate the menus during setup takes patience -- and the booklet isn't written in a very linear fashion. Having to rely on two lines of text, with no reference to where you are on the menu "tree" doesn't help.The browser-based setup has been reported as easier, though my Mac was not able to recognize the device via Bonjour, so I was not able to test it.Once setup is complete, the ease of access and compatibility with music files proves to be excellent. Song buffering is fast and music quality is very good.Still, there are lingering glitches, which Roku will presumably fix through firmware upgrades. In between listening sessions, I found I need to unplug the power source to get the unit to reboot, for example.In the end: a fun product and decent price, especially if you are a gearhead and you tend to play music continuously (i.e. turn it on and let it run).
