Duration of ownership:
Strengths: Compact roof prism design (relatively compact for a 56mm objective lens diameter). Comfortable to hold. Great price. Excellent low light performance.
Weaknesses:Heavier and longer than the other Monarch binoculars. Poor lens covers.
Overall Evaluation: This binoculars has all of the winning features of the highly-reviewed Nikon Monarch 8x42. Great image quality, no distortion, fogproof and waterproof, and great ergonomics. It is also not that much more expensive than the 8x42. At about $300 street (compared to $250 for the 8x42), you're getting a lot of glass for the money. I was deciding between buying this or the Nikon Monarch 8x42. Eventually, I decided to bear the extra bulk and weight of the 8.5x56 so that I could also use it at night when I go boating. The 8.5x56 is more bulky and twice the weight of the 8x42, but it pays off for night performance. Highly recommended.
