Strengths: Great priceEasy setupGreat picture for the money
Weaknesses:Remote challenging to navigateInstruction manual lacking
Overall Evaluation: This is our first purchase of a LCD TV, and we are very pleased so far. We paid $999 for it new, in the box. I think it may have been on clearance. The setup was easy, and we had a clear picture from the start. We were not able to find instructions on removing the stand, but we decided to set it up on a shelf instead of hanging it on a wall anyway. We were pleasantly surprised with the picture quality when using the DVD player.... and we have not even installed the HDMI cable yet! Remote control took some getting used to, but we are getting the hang of it. Overall, super value for a 40" LCD w/ built-in DVD!

Duration of ownership: 4 Months
Strengths: Picture is bright and sharp.
Weaknesses:Quality of parts, support.
Overall Evaluation: I got my Westinghouse LTV40W1-HDC 40 LCD TV/DVD Combo 4 month ago and have had problems with it from day one. Let me say that the TV has awesome picture and is perfect for me... when it works. The sounds always changes to internal speakers when it is power cycled. Every time I want to use my home stereo for my sound I need to open the menu and select external speakers. If you turn it off then on again you need to set it up again. This sounds minor but having to do this every time is getting old. It also will default with the subtitles on when a movie is played with the integrated DVD player. This too needs to be shut off via the menu every time. Also, getting old.Westinghouse told me Integrated Automaton International is the company that would fix this and they made a ticket for me with them. After about 8 calls 6 e-mails and 4 months I have yet to talk to a soul at IAI to even schedule a time to resolve this issue. Westinghouse told me I could ship it back to them but I would have to pay for the packing of the TV and they have no idea how long it would take to fix the issue.About 2 months ago any analog video input to the TV was unwatchable; it looked like a scrambled cable channel. I got the TV at Best Buy and Westinghouse told me to take it to them and they would fix it. They had the machine for over 3 weeks before I got it back. They had to replace the main board on it and despite my begging, they didn't resolve the firmware issue.I would not recommend this set to anybody despite its low cost and great picture quality. The set seems prone to breaking and the quality of support offered by Westinghouse and their third-party IAI is abysmal.

Duration of ownership:
Strengths: Bright scenes look great, variety of connections, DVD player
Weaknesses:DVD player, dark scenes, fill mode, remote
Overall Evaluation: For the price, I don't think this TV can be beat ($1200 at Best Buy). It took some tweaking, but the picture quality is excellent overall in bright scenes. Very dark scenes get a bit splotchy at times, but are OK at a normal viewing distance after tweaking. The slot-loading DVD player works fine -- I don't think it's an advertised feature, but it even played DIVX and XVID discs! But every time you put in a DVD, it automatically turns the subtitles on. This is quite annoying. The remote is not very intuitive, and it takes more steps than it should to turn the subtitles back off. Unfortunately, the remote also uses many of the same infrared codes as my Sony receiver, so I have to point it at a strange angle when controlling the TV so as not to affect the stereo receiver simultaneously. The digital SPDIF audio output works fine with HDTV and DVD, but I haven't tried it with analog channels. The fill or stretch mode is lame -- I think it just zooms and stretches the picture to fill the screen, but the algorithm it uses is pretty basic, unlike better units that stretch the image more toward the edges and less at the center.

Strengths: Great picture and superb price.
Weaknesses:Sound volume between DVD and TV dramatically different.
Overall Evaluation: I had been searching for an HDTV larger than 32" for several months a before I finally found this 40" LCD/DVD Combo. I fell in love with the Phillips 42" Plasma HDTV with Ambi-light. After viewing the Westinghouse 40" LCD I found it to be the better value with great technical quality. I found that when watching stations in HDTV and DVD, I have to turn the volume up significantly higher than while watching normal TV stations. The built-in DVD player and it works great with a variety of DVD formats. The PIP/POP/PBP function with a DVD and TV works fine as well. On-screen Menu is simple to navigate through. The manual is incomplete, it doesn't address the removal of the stand for wall mounting.
