    Duration of ownership: 2 Months

Strengths: No to low maintenance,Can change to different NAS operation system, add more linux applications

    Weaknesses:Loud fan noise

Overall Evaluation: Fusion setupIt is not very easy to setup but no to low maintenance. Firewall problem should be expected when setting up.This is a computer in a box. There are two USB 2.0 ports for storage expansion work well with Seagate Freeagent Drives. Consumes a very low 17 watts of AC power.Built in Fabrik software works OK but it is slow. Try to load a directory with more than a few high resolution photos, or it will take very long to generate the thumbnails.Very impressed with everything has been working the software from home and remote location, and most important, everything is stable. For digital photos it is a great idea is to put them on a 500GB personal web server and you can share everything. You can control who can access the server so no intruders will get in. Users can store phoyos, music, video on the Fusion and organize with Web browser, adding buttons, tags, descriptors, and folders.FreeNAS can be install to get better performance. Openfiler is another alternative.

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: - Comes built-in with 500gb drive- Very small- gigabit ethernet- two usb2.0 ports- Runs debian linux installed on the drive (not from a flash)- Comes with 256mb RAM on board.- Very solid case

    Weaknesses:- A bit noisy-

Overall Evaluation: This is essentially a micro pc with a 400mhz celeron and 256mb pc133 sodimm ram running debian Linux and comes with a reasonably complete installation (including gcc) and good swap space. The MSRP on this device is very high, but I got it in a closeout deal for about $130 including s/h and it is one of the best purchases I made in a long time. Using the information available here http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/hot-deals/830257, I opened the drive and enabled ssh. This allowed me to disable the default Fabrik installation (the daemons and apache server) as all that I need is the samba server. I was also able to update all the packages to their latest version and install quite a few new ones, including cups and now I am able to print from windows pcs over network. I was also able to compiled the latest TrueCrypt right on the device and install it such that I can share secure information across my pcs. Now that I disabled quite a few factory services, the RAM usage is quite low (56m right after the boot up), and have room to run a lot more servers in the future.

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Tons of storage, Excellent price from Tigerdirect.

Weaknesses:Requires Internet connection, Kind of hard to set up!

Overall Evaluation: I got this drive for a great bargain and it's functionality is excellent. Once it is set up it works flawlessly and allows for many options. I am looking forward to trying new setups on this drive as I am trying to use open source software on it. Do your research on this drive and you will find it has many more options than on paper.

    Duration of ownership: 1 Days

Strengths: offers good value with 500gbyte hard drive and "web server" functionality

Weaknesses:set up and interface are on the technical side with glitches that can be frustrating

Overall Evaluation: Got on a clearance deal. I wanted to share large video and photo files with less technical family and friends. It does do this but there are a number of technical issues under the hood. First off, there is a 2 Gbyte file size limit, so you will not be sharing DVD size videos. It has an email feature to send links to others but your ISP must support using port 25 (many ISPs are blocking port 25 for SPAM reasons). But overall, is it a nice package. I'm still learning and it is also possible that this thing can be hacked for the really adventurous.

    Duration of ownership: 1 Weeks

Strengths: Easy set-up if you follow the instructions, pretty interface (for those who like such things), able to serve media remotely with multiple users/segregated data after minimal hassle setting up

Weaknesses:Can't find how to do automated backups of computers on home network with built-in software.

Overall Evaluation: After suffering a hard drive crash on my primary computer last fall resulting in the loss of the digital video of my husband and I renewing our wedding vows and our baby's church dedication, I've gotten very obsessive about backups and redundancy of important data in addition to trying to find ways to share our family pictures and videos with distant family and friends without my constantly having to remember to upload something to another location (extra challenging with two children distracting me). I was hoping that this box would help automate that, and while the ability to have it act as a server for the media for off-site viewers is nice, the back-up of the home network computers is really a primary issue. I know I can accomplish this with 3rd party software pretty easily, but it seems strange that it's not included in a big glaring "CLICK HERE TO SET UP AUTOMATIC BACKUPS" way consider how common "one touch backup" buttons seem to be these days. But having caught it on clearance at tigerdirect.com for about $120 instead of the $500+ listed here, I can't really complain much. It seems rather hard to come by now, people who are interested may like to check out the new Maxtor MSS II which looks to be slightly more feature rich, product description for that one says something about automatic backups and using it as a print server. The Fusion has 2 USB inputs on the back and runs a version of Linux, if I get brave enough this summer I'll likely play around with it to see if I can get print drivers on it for our printer (which is sitting next to it on the shelf anyway).I'd recommend this unit especially for less technical folks, though if you've never configured a DNS account expect to take some time and maybe require some assistance to be able to use this to share files over the web with people outside your internal network. I've done it before (tho it's been a few years) and it still took me a bit to figure out what FreeDNS (which is one of the recommended services) was asking about. More technologically advanced folks won't need the graphical interface, the unit can be used as just a network drive (which is how I'm primarily using it, having mapped it as a drive in Win XP) if that is preferred. Files can be moved via using it as a network drive and made available through the web interface, but as far as I can tell you'll have to log into the web interface to indicate which files are OK to share (haven't tried to make folders that are shared yet as there are few files that I want publicly available).
