The portable 276C Navigator from Garmin features a 3.8-inch diagonal, 480 x 320 pixel, 256-color TFT screen with adjustable LED backlight that's easy to read in bright sun along with a built-in basemap and auto routing to provide you with turn-by-turn directions to the marina for a day of boating.On water, the GPSMAP 276C is a dependable, color chartplotter with a built-in Autoroute basemap enhanced by Garmin's marine cartography. It accepts pre-programmed or user programmed data cards with MapSource BlueChart for offshore detail or Recreational Lakes with Fishing Hot Spots for detail of inland lakes. In addition, the GPSMAP 276C supports external NMEA sources for water depth, water temperature, and water speed through two serial interfaces. The unit also features a new Course Deviation Indicator , an advanced navigation tool commonly found on aircraft, but equally practical in the marine environment.   Strengths: great screen and intuitive set up

  Weaknesses:marine basemaps lack any useful information

  Overall Evaluation: I moved up from the hand held basic entry level Garmin to the 276C. The hand held shows inlets, markers, buoys, channels for $99. To get this info into the 276C you need to buy the bluechart package for $150 more. The basemap that is included shouldn't even be called a map, its an outline of where the land meets the sea, nothing more.

  Overall Evaluation: Garmin classifies the 276C as a marine unit but it's really dual-use. Garmin made it very clear that for car use, you need the (extra) road pack and I just velcro the 276C to my steering column. With no power cords it's quick and easy to swap between car and bike too. It combines everything a GPS has to do. Locating where you are, Multi Route and Track options, Turn by Turn routing, independent power supply, reachargeble battery. Nice product!
