Duration of ownership: 2 Weeks
Strengths: Well built, high performance, sharp display.
Weaknesses:Low battery life
Overall Evaluation: I did a bit of research before purchasing the HP Compaq Mobile Workstation (nw9440, Intel Core 2 Duo processor, T7200 2.0 GHz, 80 GB, 1 GB, Three Year Warranty) and am finding it to be a high quality notebook that I will use both professionally and personally. The notebook has more powerful processing capabilities, as much memory, and as capable a hard drive as the 2-3 year old desktop I have been using. There is no way I would be disappointed with its performance today given my current needs. The display is very sharp. I have a high quality monitor and graphics card on my desktop machine and am as pleased with the notebooks display. I was considering a smaller display but am now glad I opted for the 17" display. The larger screen is well worth the extra weight and size, and that is with knowing that I will be traveling with the machine often for business. The keyboard has a very solid feel though I don't particularly like typing when the keys are on the same plane as my wrists as with notebook computers. I like the choice of both touchpad and pointstick. I primarily use the later when moving the cursor. I would not want a machine without the pointstick. I occassionally use the former for scrolling. The machine is not particularly hot when it's sitting on my lap. The case is solid and it has a professional look. I did not but am now considering buying a docking station for the notebook. HP includes some extra software and utilities beyond Windows XP but all of that extra software is higher quality rather than promotional or bloat. I successfully booted into Utunbu Linux using the workstation though I have not as yet done a thorough investigation of what's compatible and what's not compatible with that operating systemAs of this point, I need to do some investigation to optimize battery life. HP states 3 hours battery life but I'm not getting near that much time, though I have a number of extra applications running in the background. That would be my only concern to date.
