Linksys WRE54G Wireless Range Extender

Strengths: Does what it is supposed to do ... extend the range of your wireless router

    Weaknesses:Occasionally needs to be "re-booted"

Overall Evaluation: I had read numerous reviews that the product was fine but that the installation was awful. I agree that using the software and instructions that come in the package was pretty much a waste of time. It is surprising that Linksys could do such a poor job on this. However, the automatic configuration button that is on the unit itself worked perfectly first time. This is the second unit I have had, and it generally works pretty well for its intended use.

    Strengths: Good Product name

    Weaknesses:Defective unit

Overall Evaluation: Spent a week trying to connect to system, called Linksys and ran tests found unit would not connect, defective. Have not received a replacement other then an email saying they would cancel my order, all I want is to have the unit replaced with one that works. Returned defective unit, have not received replacement or credit since.

Strengths: Works great to extend the range of an wireless connection. Easy to set up.

Weaknesses:Incomplete explanation. Should be mentioned as for nonspecialists that the broadcast name and channel must be the same as that of the access point.Does not work with T-Mobile WiFi phones.

Overall Evaluation: It is a cool range extender for those that only surf internet. Sensitive to speed people could find some delay in opening pages, however the delay is very short.I do not recomend using this repeater when the computer is used for telephony like using voip services or connecting your WiFi phone to make phone calls. There are regular annoying interuptions during the conversation.

    Strengths: NONE

Weaknesses:Could NOt get expander to work. Manufacturer support was a big zero.

Overall Evaluation: Could not get software to work. My son a software specialist could not get it to work. We called Linksys and all of the people we talked to just wanted to sell extended warranties. Most of the Linksys people knew very little about the technical aspects of routers and the expander. By the way my router which has worked for several years is also a Linsysy. Do Not buy this product!

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Good signal strengthGood, compact design

    Weaknesses:Doesn't work well with Macs

Overall Evaluation: If you have a Mac laptop, in my case a Powerbook G4 running OS-X 10.4, I suggest you stay away from this device. I actually have mixed feelings about it. The setup program works well, and the device configured to my wireless network with little difficulty. My G4 saw the device, but was unable to get an IP address using DHCP. I spent over an hour in a chat session with Linksys tech support, and that was followed up by a call from a supervisor there who spent another hour with me. One thing which was (finally) suggested, which also appears in various forums, was to manually configure an IP address in System Preferences --> Network. Apparently this works for some, but it didn't for me. I'm returning the device. So why are my feelings mixed instead of all negative? (1) The level of (attempted) support was outstanding, especially since Linksys doesn't always get good marks. (2) The device does a great job with my wife's PC laptop running Vista. It just doesn't work well with Macs. Linksys knows this and has corrected the same problem with early models of its wireless routers (I use one and the Mac sees and can use it, but with an extremely low signal, thus the need for an expander.) I don't understand why they can't fix this guy! If you're a Mac user you're better off with the Belkin 5FD-7132 which you can usually buy for less. It has an annoying tendency to drop its connection to the router occasionally, but at least it works most of the time.
