Nintendo Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition (GC)

Strengths: Four of the best games of all time on one disc, slightly updated resolutions, two bonus videos.

Weaknesses:Though I haven't had any problems, some people have reported glitches in Majora's Mask. The controls for the N64 games are less intuitive than the originals.

Overall Evaluation: This is one of the best game compilations ever produced, second only to Super Mario Allstars in my mind. Zelda and Zelda II (for NES) are flawlessly emulated. The two N64 titles (Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask) are emulated quite well. There's some slight slowdowns when loading the menu and the music skips from time to time, but no real big problems. The games are still amazing. Ocarina of Time is the real gem here, though I kind of prefer Majora's Mask in some respects. Both NES games are good, but they're starting to show their age and the GameCube d-pad isn't the best for controlling these games. The extra videos are nothing special, but kind of fun to watch. There's also a 20-minute Wind Waker demo, but you probably won't be buying this disc for a demo. The price could be the best or worst part, depending on your circumstances. When this game was released, it was offered free with a Nintendo Power subscription, purchase of a new GameCube, or registering two games at Nintendo.com. If you were able to acquire the game by one of those methods, it's an awesome deal. However, the game is rather expensive (and hard to find) pre-played. It's still a must-have for any Zelda fan, and highly recommended to anyone else, but you might have to pay a little extra for it.

Strengths: Four classic Zelda games in one place; Excellent versions of NES games

Weaknesses:High cost (recently); Fair and poor versions of the N64 games

Overall Evaluation: On one Gamecube disk you get Zelda I and II from the NES as well as the N64's Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time. The NES game ports are perfect duplicates of the original versions, but the N64 versions should have had more time spent on the emulator running them. Ocarina of Time holds up relatively well with minor problems, but Majora's Mask is a mess (although playable). There is even a disclaimer in the instruction book about sound problems with Majora's Mask. Make no mistake, this package is certainly worth the money if only for the fact that you get to use the Gamecube's excellent controller for these classic games. That said, you may be better served hoping for a better port of the N64 games when the Revolution comes out.

Strengths: 4 Zelda games on one disc.

Weaknesses:Slowdown in both N64 Zelda games and Majora's mask has a few other issues like music skips and game crashes.

Overall Evaluation: The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition is a game for Gamecube that is a collection of four previous Zelda games. You get The Legend of Zelda (NES), Zelda II: The Adventures of Link (NES), The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64), and The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64). The two NES Zelda games are ported flawlessly. They look dated, but both are still fun games. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is a slightly flawed port with some slowdown, but nothing to hinder gameplay at all. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask has a lot of problems. Problems range from slowdown, to musics skipping, or even the game crashing. Nothing like playing a game and worrying that it will crash. Just remember to save often when playing Majora's Mask. Give it 5 stars just because you are getting 4 games for the price of one or even free (with gamecube bundle purchase or Nintendo power subscription, both which are no longer available) depending on how you acquired it.

    Duration of ownership: 1 Years

Strengths: 4 Legend of Zelda games.

    Weaknesses:Slowdown.

Overall Evaluation: This is THE collector's edition for any Zelda fan that owns a Gamecube. You get 4 complete Legend of Zelda games (The Legend of Zelda[NES], Zelda II: The Adventures of Link[NES], The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time[N64], and The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask[N64])The only problem is that the two N64 titles were not ported too well. Both of them have slowdown that was not in the N64 release and it is pretty noticeable. The two NES titles, however, are presented flawlessly. It would have been nice to have A Link to the Past also, but I'm still happy with it as it is. It's still an incredible collection to own, especially if you have missed a previous Zelda.

    Strengths: Zelda OOT

    Weaknesses:Graphics have aged

Overall Evaluation: Zelda Collector's Edition compiles 4 classic Zelda games. The NES games included and Majora's Mask are all fine and good, but Ocarina of Time is what really matters here. The game has aged extremely well and it's still as fun to play now as it was when the game first game out in '98. The graphics obviously aren't up to today's standards, but there is a higher resolution with the Gamecube version than with the N64 version and the game supports progressive scan. The gameplay is all in tact and really, all adventure fans will love this compilation since it has 4 awesome classic Zelda games.
