Strengths: this is the camera to get if you're stepping up to SLR from point & shoot. This camera is easy to operate, fits comfortably in your hand..takes great photos. Has helpful info you can view on lcd screen. this camera is simply the best for those who aren't sure about moving up to SLR camera....this is for you.
Weaknesses:the only feature i didn't like (but will live with) unlike my 2 previous point and shoot sony's...once you save & lock a photo to SD card.& later change your mind about keeping that shot..you cannot delete the locked saved photo until you reformatt your sd card. with my sony's i was able to unlock and delete without reformatting anything.
Overall Evaluation: You couldn't ask for better camera that takes wonderful photos for the price..and don't let the 6.1megapixels fool ya...that's more than enough for an 8x10 sized photo!

Strengths: Everything about this camera ROCKS!
Weaknesses:Beach Camera is misleading buyers. They've lost my business.
Overall Evaluation: My beef is with Beach Camera who are misleading people by offering a FREE 2GB Memory COMPACT Card which doesn't work in the Nikon D40. Definitely, buy this camera...from someone else.

Strengths: Great picture quality, VERY fast, great build quality, huge viewfinder, great features
Weaknesses:Only 6 megapixels
Overall Evaluation: This is a great camera. It takes great shots. It is so much faster than any compact camera I've used. With my previous compact camera I would have to wait over 4 seconds between shots with flash. With the D40, once you take the shot, it's ready for another one.The grip is large and well built. The kit lens is a little too lightweight in my opinion, but it's not that hard to get used to it.I was pleasantly surprised by the viewfinder. I was expecting it too be small and dark. It's actually very large and bright for a camera in its class. The only problem some people might have with the D40 is the fact that it's only 6 megapixels. If you need to print posters or crop your images a lot, you may need a 10 megapixel camera. Otherwise, this is a great entry-level DSLR.

Strengths: Unmatched picture clarity even the blowups of 20" x 30" are crystal clear, nice inbuilt flash of its kind, hats off to nikon for making such a camera for $500 and beach camera met the expectation.
Weaknesses:not found any...needs to make little more R & D and i will let u know
Overall Evaluation: I strongly recommend this camera for any ammeture.I love to have this camera for my lifetime.I thought of buying canon xti but the grip didnt impressed me...and 6 mega will get u what u want...more than enough na !

Strengths: Easy to use, great photo quality, fantastic price
Weaknesses:Haven't found any yet.
Overall Evaluation: I just bought this camera 09/04/2007. I have not used a real camera since the 1980's and was initially a little intimidated. After about an hour I felt like I had been using this camera forever. When I decided to but a DSLR I was torn between Cannon, Pentax and this Nikon. I always wanted a Nikon and went for it although it was more expensive than the other two choices. If you are on the fence about buying this camera Sears has a 30 day price match gaurantee and is currently offering a promotion of no payment and no interest until September 2009. The Sears price is $599 but Costco has this camera on sale for $499. If you take in the Costco price from Costco.com Sears will reduce their price to $489, making this camera a steal.

Review:
Nikon D40
This well-crafted digital SLR offers high-end features and very good image quality at a low-end price.
A few years ago, $1000 was a critical price barrier for digital SLRs. Now, as interest in SLRs has grown among casual photographers, vendors have been racing to produce a $500 model. Though no camera has reachede that goal yet, Nikon's new D40 comes close. For $600, you get a very capable digital SLR camera with impressive image quality.
