Strengths: None
Weaknesses:The backup software bundled with the machine is only a 30-day trial. The machine could not be plugged into my new Dell running Windows XP during startup. It hung up the startup. I had to remove the USB connection to the PC before restart. Absolutely no manuals included in the box or apparently loaded onto the computer. With the first two problems, I didn't bother searching for a manual.
Overall Evaluation: I do not recommend this product, and am unlikely to buy any Seagate product after seeing their poor packaging and results on this one.

Strengths: jkleinlein, there is an on-off switch right in front. It's touch-sensitive: hold your finger on it and it turns off; quickly touch it and it turns back on. It's marked fairly clearly with the standard on/off icon.
Weaknesses:Base contains the interfaces and is non-removable.
Overall Evaluation: Nice drive, nice looking, great price.

Weaknesses:Just Won't Work. Gives Error Messages, Windows XP Can't Find The Device.
Overall Evaluation: I Backed Up My C Drive On This External Drive. I Started Getting Error Messages And XP Couldn't Locate The Drive. Thinking I Needed To Re-Format My C Drive, I Did. Now The External Drive Has All My Backed Up Information On It And I Can't Get Into It. Lost Everything. I Won't Return The Drive Because I Don't Want My Personal Information Viewed By Someone. I Have Financial Statements, Passwords, Ect, That I Will Not Share. I Will Never Buy Another Seagate Product Again. Western Digital Here I Come.

Strengths: 5 year warranty, contemporary design, no need to turn off and on, quiet.
Weaknesses:Only USB, base not detachable.
Overall Evaluation: This 500 GB hard drive does exactly what it should, and it was up and running instantly when plugged into my computer. Seagate's 5 year warranty is amazing. I actually kind of like the fact that there is no on/off button. So when I turn off my computer to go to bed, the HD turns off too. One less thing to worry about. Quiet as a mouse, I would never know it turns on. I like the subtle pulsing when the HDD is at work.I'm kind of torn about the base. I was hopping it could come off, so that the HDD could either stand upright or lie flat. I discovered that the base has all the electronics in it, so it cannot be detached. It has a relatively small footprint still, but it would be nice for a little more flextibility. The base is only USB, but it's not a big problem for me. I use this to store movies, and it works great for accessing them from Vista Media Center.

Strengths: Large storage, cheap to buy
Weaknesses:Ugly, horrible coloured light, weird looking, unreliable
Overall Evaluation: I\\\\\\\'ve owned this device for a total of two days, and bought it to enable me backup my PC data so I could restore my PC. After transferring 30GB of photos, music, and personal documents to it I restored my PC and started the process of transferring the data back to my PCs hard disk. I got about 30 mp3s in and suddenly it stopped working emitting a whining noise. It looks like I\\\\\\\'ve lost all my data. Needless to say I\\\\\\\'m furious, I expect more than 2 days use from a device like this, and the sloppy quality control has caused me immeasurable loss.Don\\\\\\\'t trust your valuable data to this one!
