Duration of ownership:
Strengths: Fast Lookups, Speaking Ability, Largest Definition Data Base, Limited User Input Required, Spells better than Word Processor Programs like MS Word.
Weaknesses:I'd rather it was smaller in size. It's a bit chunky, if you need to lug it around.
Overall Evaluation: I've owned one of these for so long I've worn the letters off and it out. I wouldn't be without it. The speed of word lookups takes the drudgery out of using a dictionary. One of the features I like the most is its ability to use what I call wild cards. Say you know how the word starts, but that's about all. No problem, just type in the known letters followed by +? and then let the LM6000b do its work. It will scroll a list of all words in its data base that begin with those letters. It then becomes a simple matter of picking your word from the list. Perhaps you only know the ending letters, no problem +? and then those known letters will bring up a comparable list. Are you a poor speller? Take it from a lousy speller like me; the LM6000b will amaze you. Type in what it sounds like to you and the LM6000b somehow finds it! Sometimes I'm truly in left field on the spelling, and the correct word still pops up in the LCD screen as a suggested word.Add in the Thesaurus and you can spice up your writing, even on those days words seem to escape you.Don't think you need a "speaking" dictionary? Perhaps you don't, but then again perhaps you do. Not all English words are pronounced as they are written. Take for example the word respite. If you didn't know the word, you'd definitely mispronounce it. I did a good deal of research checking to be sure they hadn't come out with something better since I first purchased mine. I found nothing out there with more than the 300,000 definitions available on the LM6000b; the closest had 100,000 less! Sure there are other dictionaries with more whistles and bells, but none have the sheer number of definitions you'll find with the LM6000b. So if you're as busy as the rest of us and spending time fumbling with a dictionary isn't your idea of fun, then the Franklin LM6000b may be just the thing for you. I know it is for me. As I said, I wouldn't be without it. I've just ordered my replacement and already I've needed it dozens of time, while I'm waiting for my new Franklin LM6000b to arrive.
