Strengths: loads of space for the price, easy setup, easy administration, small device, runs quiet, good tech support, ability to use static IP or DHCP.

    Weaknesses:I haven't encountered any.

Overall Evaluation: I was looking for a large storage device to backup files from my MacBook and to keep customer files updated daily. I wanted to hang it on my network and always have it available. I researched for about a month before deciding to purchase the big disk. I wanted something that would work across platforms since I have different operating systems on my network. I am able to access the disk from each computer in my house. The speed writing to the disk is good. I have copied a lot of photos to the big disk and they copied fast. If you have a Mac and are planning to use it with Time Machine, you won't be able too because the disk would need to be formatted for a mac. This is perfect to use as a back up device for your whole family on your home network. The price of this drive for the space you get is terrific. The device is pretty quiet but I won't want to set it up in a bedroom. Comes with a backup utility but I haven't used it so I can't comment on it. I would rather drag and drop. I had a couple questions to ask the support people. When you register your product you are eligible for free support. You can write in your question and then they get back to you via email. The turn around time was very short and the answers I got back were very complete. Rare for support today.

Strengths: Can connect via ethernet for wireless connectivity.

Weaknesses:I don't know yet. Just installed.

Overall Evaluation: I just bought this for use with my MacBook Pro and I couldn't believe how easy it was to install. I expected to spend most of my evening figuring out how to install it because this has been my experience with most computing products, but with the LaCie drive I took it out of the box, plugged it in (I'm using Airport via Ethernet connection), ran the software and was able to start downloading pictures to it in less than 10 minutes. Very happy with the setup.

    Duration of ownership: 2 Weeks

Strengths: Slim, quiet, gigabit port, media server, can add-on secondary hard drive via USB port

Weaknesses:Cumbersome and slow administration, mediocre data transfer rates, not a true mass storage device via USB

Overall Evaluation: It's a decent NAS for its price, but you get what you pay for. You have to create "shares" and "users," then assign everything in its painfully slow web-based interface. You can access files via HTTP, FTP, Windows, AFP, AppleTalk, etc., and you can even enable "media server" mode so that iTunes can pick it up as a shared library, but you can't specify particular filename extensions. FTP is quirky, too - with an FTP client, you have to manually change to the "shared" directory, since the root is "empty." Transferring files via the Gigabit port is so much faster than a direct USB 2.0 connection - go figure. onSale.com and Lacie had a severe price drop over the last couple weeks, be careful.
