Strengths: New features make this a have to have upgrade

Weaknesses:Still no Blu-Ray burning support (at least as of this review).

Overall Evaluation: I'm only a hobbyist when it comes to video editing but I've enjoyed FCP and then FCS since the 1.0 days. While the screen layout has remained constant the features have grown as technology has changed and video editors needed new tools. Of course without this evolution there would be no real reason to ever upgrade. In fact the main motivation for me upgrading to FCS 2 was for really for two tiny new features. The first new feature which I find invaluable is the ability to easily mix different formats such as 720p and 1080i HD clips in the same video on the fly. I can even add in SD DV. Before FCS 2 I would have had to do a lot of re-encode first, which takes time, and as a hobbyist, not really practical. Now I don't have to worry what video camera I take with me, or have to waste time if I want to add an older clip to my video. The next great addition which is super cool is Hollywood style 3D effects in Motion. It's now so easy to make pro-looking intro clips that you'd see on TV or a movie. Video and stills can move in any direction now giving the screen real depth.I also enjoy the new realtime effects...no more need to render a clip to see the effect. This is a fantastic time saver and also helps keep the creative juices flowing. There are, of course, lots of other new additions to FCS 2, like the reworked Compressor which is now more inituitive, and the Color app which lets you color correct in real time. All in all FCS 2 isn't earth shattering, but it is a worthwhile update if you are interested in any of the new features...and why wouldn't you be? The one glaring and frustrating thing missing is Blu-Ray support. Hopefully Apple will add this with a free update in '08 (MWSF maybe?)

    Strengths: powerful programs

    Weaknesses:steep learning curve

Overall Evaluation: It's a powerful program that requires alot of training whether it's by manual, CD, classroom etc. Once it's mastered it should be a delight to use. I supplement my training with Apple seminars, on-line tutorials, and just plain digging in and working on projects.
