TYAN Tyan Computer Corp. Transport GX28-1U Dual AMD Opteron

Based on the breakthrough 64-bit technology of dual AMD Opteron processors, with the incredible I/O capabilities of HyperTransport, the Tyan Transport GX28 (B2881) gives a wide range of functions while delivering excellent computational performance. Everything you need is built-in: four hot-swap SATA drive bays with RAID 0, 1, and 10, a Silicon Image SI3114 4-port S-ATA RAID controller, two (2) PCI-X 133 expansion slots, support for up to 16GB of Registered DDR400 memory, two (2) Gigabit Ethernet ports, and a 400W power supply with PFC. In addition, the Transport GX28 (B2881) also features an ATI Rage XL 8MB PCI graphics controller, front USB, smart auto-fan speed control, remote management options, and a slim CD-ROM drive that comes standard. It supports a TYAN Thunder K8SR (S2881) Extended ATX footprint (13" x 12") motherboard.

Duration of ownership:

Strengths: seems well built, cutting edge features, fair price.

Weaknesses:It's too LOUD!

Overall Evaluation: This server is extremely loud. Unless you plan on keeping it in a seperate air conditioned server room, I would go for a standard tower or 4U design instead. This may be typical of a 1U server, I just wish I would have known this before I purchased since I planned on mounting it in an open office environment.
