Strengths: Web interface (IE only), decent VLAN configuration, cheap
Weaknesses:Poor or wrong documentation, only IE works with web interface, MAJOR heat problems, vents out SIDE not the back, stability issues
Overall Evaluation: In my experience I have had several problems with Netgear equipment and this product is no different. Unfortunately this time I did not get to choose the switches for my project. The major problem with this switch is its heat issues. The switch gets very hot very fast and unfortunately vents out the SIDE. This means if you have racks side by side, the switch will start to cook whatever is in the adjacent rack slot. Leaving gaps around the switch or having the side it vents on open does not seem to cool it off enough even though I have them in a room with a dedicated AC unit right next to the rack! Also it is annoying that only Internet Explorer seems to be able to actually make changes via the web interface. Firefox and Konqueror do not seem to work, so it is possible the web interface uses ActiveX web controls which it should not need to do.Even the various documentation conflicts itself or is wrong. Some documentation says the default interface is 192.168.0.238 but all these Netgear switches I have use a default of the 192.168.0.239 . One final annoyance is that they seem flakey (possibly due to overheating). Sometimes random VLANs will stop working or the lights will remain on but no traffic will be passed. Pulling the power cord, letting it cool, and then plugging it in does NOT have the switch working again. You apparently have to go back into the web configuration and APPLY the configuration so that the switch starts using it after power on! To clarify you do NOT make any changes but merely inform the switch to USE the settings it already has stored in its flash memory. Calls to Netgear Support about this said it was a known issue and there is no fix planned.I bought 6 of these initially and 1 year later 2 have died due to heat problems which I had to replace. The bad failure rate and the fact I have to leave large portions of my racks open so these things do not heat up and die is why I do not recommend buying these switches even though they are pretty cheap now.

Strengths: Cheap, works great for simple configurations
Weaknesses:web interface doesn't work with Mozilla Firefox, VLAN support breaks easily
Overall Evaluation: I bought three of these switches. Two are working fine trunked together. The other I needed to configure with VLANs. After removing the testing VLAN, I couldn't add my production ones to the switch. I swapped hardware and was able to get it working, but after a power outage it was no longer passing data between tagged and untagged ports. After trying a factory reset I couldn't add my VLANs back to the switch.

Strengths: Easy setup utility, worked great out of the box. Good network speed across all ports. Works great in hot environments.
Weaknesses:None
Overall Evaluation: I use this in my office of 28 people. We use VMWare and all our images are on a file server. On average an employee will download about 12 gigs a day. It now takes them only 15 minutes to download 12 gigs. What a convenience.
