Duration of ownership: 6 Months

Strengths: I wrote an excellent over-all review on this product after owning one for six weeks. My purchase date was October 20, 2004. However, the product & installed software haS developed..EXTREME PROBLEMS!

Weaknesses:UNABLE TO PLAY CD'S & DVD'S WITHOUT PROBLEMS.

Overall Evaluation: I am a week into the above CD & DVD playing problems. The installed Sony "Inter-Vidio -WINDVD for Vaio & Windows Media will not play CD's & DVD's. I have 'down-loaded' from the Sony website..("the-fix") but the problem has not been resolved. The main reason for the problem (IN MY OPINION) is many of the Microsoft Security Updates are not compatible with any of the installed Media Players. Also... Specifically...I purchased from RealNetworks their top-of-the-line Player but experienced the same problem. The Sony VGN-A290 will not play a sound CD...nor will it play any DVD. My experience was that the CD and DVD's would not load properly. The drive will just keep "stroking" & "Stroking". I had planned to use the Sony VGN-A290 Media Center unit to play a large LCD HD Screen. The problem has been in existance since Feb. of 2004. I WILL CLOSE BY SAYING THAT THE FIX AT THE SONY WEBSITE DOES NOT WORK. GOOD LUCK!
