Strengths: Decent price, good sound when used for rear speakers
Weaknesses:Mounting; performance degrades with long cables
Overall Evaluation: I used the 161's as rear speakers in my home theater (connected to an old Dolby Pro Logic receiver.) The sound is fairly good, but I found the following problems: * The mount kit does not provide screws to attach the mount to the wall. * With the way that the speakers to the wall mounts, I was unable to place them where I wanted in the room. I wanted to place them between the window and the wall (about 18 inches) and I did not have enough room to get a screw driver in to screw the speakers into their mount. I had to move them above the window, and I do not think I am getting the most out of them up there. * If you look in the manual, you'll see that Bose recommends and upper limit on speaker wire length depending on the gauge used. For the 16-gauge wire I am using the upper limit 45 meters. If using these as rear speakers, this is something to take into consideration. They do sound pretty good as rear speakers. If/when I do upgrade my receiver to 7.1, I am considering another pair of these

Strengths: Small size, outstanding sound, low price
Weaknesses:none
Overall Evaluation: Bose packages these as surround speakers in one of their home theater groups, and it's pretty clear that this is what they were designed for. The 2.5 inch drivers are more than adequate for surround material in a small environment. My listening/viewing room is not large (13x20) and I recently upgraded my receiver to an Onkyo 7.1. I already had speakers in place for front L/R and Center (Klipsch) and side surround (Boston). The Bose 161s were installed as the L/R rear surround speakers. During the speaker set-up with test tones and playback of some of my THX encoded DVDs, the Bose speakers fit in seamlessly. This is a great little speaker for the price.

Strengths: Small , good sound, mounting brackets
Weaknesses:Clips for speaker wire
Overall Evaluation: I bought these to replace my main speakers in my surround sound system and they do a great job. Sound is clear and crisp. Mounting is easy with the included brackets. Would like to see something better than the clips for the speaker wires.
