Strengths: very nice packaging, nice looking, easy set up plug and play. very clear text.
Weaknesses:tone down brightness and contrast for surfing and leave it up for dvd's. Side buttons would be better on front but work well after a few pushes.
Overall Evaluation: I have been looking for a large monitor for several weeks. I've been online with c-net, nextag you name it. I went to a few stores just to see if I really wanted a 22 or 24. I kept seeing this 27.5 in. from Hanns-G. Costco had it on their web site. Best Buy had it in Sunday paper add, so I drove to the store too see it. I played with it in store for 30 min. and bought it. I was a little fearful it wouldn't run with my 4 year old equipment. I took my time unpacking it and hooking it up. If I just ripped and pluged I could have had it running in 10 min. or less.It was truly plug and play. I reset to resolution to max for this moniter and reduced the brightness to a soothing level.I am very happy with my hg281 hanns-g. I have to give it a 5 because I can find nothing wrong. No dead pixels no wavy lines. I this moniter fits your pocket book buy it.

Strengths: Price, size
Weaknesses:OSD, failed
Overall Evaluation: Bought this monitor in early March, before the end of the month it died. I woke up one morning and found that the monitor was completely white, no picture showed up. I tried all the normal things but to no avail, unfortunately the store I bought it at no longer carried it so I had to get a smaller monitor. I thought the price was too good to be true, and in my case it was.

Strengths: Affordable, large monitor.
Weaknesses:Terrible black levels and no black level adjustment. Twisted Nematic display means colors shift and blacks shine like chrome; complicated and annoying pushbutton control menus
Overall Evaluation: I bought this because I was hoping to find a 1920x1200 res monitor that I could use on my desktop in my bedroom - something I would work at then chill at bedtime with a movie. While this monitor is great for most desktop work, it is NOT a monitor you want for watching tv or movies. With color levels above about 16,16,16 (ie "almost completely black" it works very well and you will never notice its weaknesses; once the lights dim onscreen the glare becomes just too much. Unfortunately, you cannot simply adjust this out even with the computer's gamma controls because one then runs into the problem of TN's limited color gamut which only compounds the already poor black level resolution of digitally compressed video.I didn't even think about it at the time but the Hanns-G essentially has 1080p pixel resolution. When comparing this monitor to the range of TELEVISIONS out there that also have hdmi inputs, this monitor simply fails to deliver - you're better off spending 400 to 500 bucks on a 28"-42" LCD set that uses a higher quality LCD that doesn't suffer from such limited viewing angles and poor color gamut. Lesson learned: I've kept the monitor too long to return it under Mwave's generous 30 day guarantee. Hopefully I can recoup most of my investment via ebay once I have replaced this "desktop monitor" with a higher quality "TV set."

Strengths: bright,large, cheap
Weaknesses:terrible warranty and use 3rd party companies to deal with warranties
Overall Evaluation: DO NOT BUY!! Hanns-G have one of the worst pixel warranty deals...10 dead pixels before they will fix it. Have you ever seen a screen with 10 dead pixels?? It ain't pretty. They advertise they have one of the best in the industry but c'mon most others are 3 or even zero nowadays, 10 is 5 years ago. Yes it is pretty and yes the price is excellent but lets be honest its that for a reason..getting that warm feeling from a bargain is wonderful but we all know how it feels when it goes wrong. My screen has a big bright red dot and it is .......really annoying.

Strengths: Clear picture, sleek design, great value for size
Weaknesses:Built-in speakers are not great quality
Overall Evaluation: Great picture, great value for size in product comparisons. If not interested in audio performance, this is an ideal monitor for home use. Works great with wireless networking. Extra ports for HD plug ins. Screen may be a bit pixelated when using multiple wireless components through wireless router but arguably this is interference and not a fault of the monitor.
