Adobe Photoshop 7.0

Strengths: Fully featured, carries almost every image format imaginable, extremely powerful and flexible - if it can be done, this tool can do it.

Weaknesses:Doesn't come with many of the professional filters graphic designers use to get the job done fast and easy. Getting those is an extra major cha-ching.

Overall Evaluation: This is the best image/photo editing platform available. Whether you're creating new digital images from scratch for anything from liberal arts to page layout to print media to web graphics or you're editing existing images, no tool outshines Photoshop in the professional world. Features in the 7.0 version include dynamic brushes, improved paths and channels, and a wide assortment of ergonomic design changes and improved support for tablet/stylus users. Of course it still has all the same features from previous versions in an improved interface, such as complex layering, masking, gradiated filtering, complex selection tools and all your favorite color balancing tools. The learning curve is well worth taking the time to learn how to use this platform and there are a host of great books and classes available for learning how to use PhotoShop for any image editing needs be they general or very specific. This is a must have for any designer.

Strengths: Sophisticated, professional tool for photoediting. The same tool that professionals use in their job. This is the tool of choice - both for capabilities and also because it is the defacto standard

Weaknesses:With high capability, comes high complexity. Stay away if you only have simple needs, because this has a steep learning curve.Lacks features of newest Photoshop CS2 versions

Overall Evaluation: This is the first version I've owned, but my child has used Photoshop 5 at school. My child is heavily into photography and it the preferred picture editing tool. We have owned and continue to use a few others such as ACDSee for particular tasks, but this has more capability (and more completcity)Some notes about the 7.0 release. The "healing tool" is a real time saver if you are working on restoring old slides. There are a number of patches from the Adobe site, so be sure to download them.On the negative side, it does lack some of the newer features of Photoshop CS2. But, if you need them, and you don't already own photoshop 7 (or newer) it is still cheaper to buy Photoshop 7 and then buy the upgrade version of CS2 instead of buying the new product directly at retail (or even at Academic pricing)As an aside, there are many fradulent websites selling "downloadable" or "backup" CD versions of Photoshop. To my knowledge, none of these are legal - and they are often based out of country.I selected my vendor based on their pricegrabber affiliation and user feedback - and am counting on the pricegrabber folks to ensure their vendors are operating legally

    Strengths: Powerful editing tools.

    Weaknesses:Steep learning curve!

Overall Evaluation: So far, I think it is a fine product, but perhaps a bit more powerful than what I need, but I hope that once I figure it all out, I will have any tool on hand that I might need.

Strengths: By far, Adobe Photoshop has more utilities at its disposal than any other program seen. From the quirky filters to the wonderful light and color balancing, it simply outshines the competition.

Weaknesses:It may require training for the beginner, and the time to master Photoshop can be long. There's such an abundance of tools, you most likely will never use or see everything there is. No icon support.

Overall Evaluation: All in all, despite the high price tag, Photoshop is well worth the price. The ability to interact with other programs via plugins constantly breathes new life and new applications into the program. The filters built into Photoshop are multiple and can perform a vast amount of visual trickery. Auto contrast and level controls make cleaning up a photo easy and rewarding. Applying black and white, sepia, inversion, are all standard here. Other controls include adding wind, emboss, swirl, exposure, dust, despeckle, sharpen, blur, artistic, and lighting. It is also very easy to rotate, resize, crop, create layers, and work on only portions of a picture. A word of warning. Adobe offers registration on ALL products, even so called "OEM." If it cannot be registered, it is not legal!
