Duration of ownership: 2 Years
Strengths: Attractive design, cheap.
Weaknesses:Extremely large AC adapter.
Overall Evaluation: This router has served me well for about two years now. When I got it, it did suffer from occasional dropped connections, especially with many downloads going at once. But since I updated the firmware to version 4.15 in Dec 2003 I haven't had a single drop-out. The price has come down a bit, so I would suggest picking one up, especially if you can find a rebate.

Strengths: Looks Pretty
Weaknesses:Bad Customer Support, bad Firmware, Incomplete Firmware.
Overall Evaluation: I bought this due to it's earning several Awards. DON'T BELIEVE THEM. First, I had the RP614 attached to a DSL Modem with a port speed of 10 kbs, the RP614 misreports the WAN speed at 100 kbs or as an error in one of the utilities in it's web interface. This WAN Port in time becomes unstable and eventually fails, requiring a power cycle of the router. Second, there were at least 3 and at times 4 different Firmware Versions posted on NetGear's website. All having problems and most clearly indicating that they were Beta's or a Release Candidate (Never a complete version). Each one had things wrong. The latest version had a more stable WAN Port, but would not pass VPN reliably. Third, Tech support, had me send the router in for a replacement, the shipping on my nickel, with exactly the same results. They blamed my DSL Modem. The same DSL modem that had been working flawlessly with a D-link router that eventually failed, and now works flawlessly with a newer model of a D-link router that I now use. I currently own a RP-614 router that has absolutely no value to me. I have disabled the DHCP portion and I'm using it as a switch. Conclusion, Don't Buy One of These at any Price!

Duration of ownership: 3 Months
Strengths: Easy to configure & friendly web environment
Weaknesses:It hangs-up once a while, poor port forwarding features and no port triggering
Overall Evaluation: I bought this product for its high performance WAN/LAN transferring. I have an ISP that delivers pure 10Mbps Internet connection at home. When I bought it I was warned by the seller of it does not work with my ISP and it was so, the RP-614 could not get an IP address from my ISP. I called the service and it was not helpful at all. I was told that it will never work with my ISP. Then I went to Netgear's web page, downloaded the latest firmware and EUREKA! it worked! Then I called back the service to inform them about it but it seems they did not care. Nothing has been published about it neither the seller has been informed. This device adds a very low latency to the internet traffic (1ms) and gives around 7Mbps WAN/LAN transferring. Problems with ICQ when transferring files and/or pc-to-pc talk. It is quite frustrating when this device hangs-up. It mainly occurs when having heavy traffic on WAN port. In general, I would say that this product is quite good for its price. If your Internet connection is under 5Mbps I would check for some other similar products. If your Internet connection is above 5Mbps I have not found a better product, so far.

Duration of ownership: 3 Months
Strengths: very easy to set up, nice look, fast connection(when working)
Weaknesses:works half the time, awful tech support
Overall Evaluation: I have to admit, the RP614 looks very sleek but that is as far as it goes for me. I have had too many problems working with this router. Many times I have lost connection entirely. When I first got the router I would have to restart my computer many times before I finally got a decent connection. Granted, when I did actually get a connection, it worked perfectly fine. Another problem though that I have been getting is downloads will just stop. I have had them start off at over 250 or 300 kb/sec but then drop to 10 kb/sec and then just freeze. The biggest problem I've had with this router is the technical support. For crying out loud, I need to speak to someone whom English isn't their second language. I have also had to contact them five times about the same problem. Still my problem is not fixed. They always seem to come up with temporary solutions to the problem. One good thing that is coming out of all my hassle is that they are saying that my router might be defective. So right now I am waiting for a senior tech support person to call me and see if the router really is defective. The only problem is, I'm not the only one who has had these problems, so hopefully their were also defects, and their problems are fixed.

Strengths: looks nice
Weaknesses:doesnt work as it should(cant lan over internet) tech support hard to understand and did not know what he was talking about
Overall Evaluation: i owned a netgear 4port rp614 for 2 weeks -it worked fine on my computer. then a friend came over and we tried to set up a lan and game online-internet kept cutting out-i verfied with my dsl provider that my dsl was fine-i plugged in my friends router(a d-link) and everything worked fine -plugged mine back in and intermittent internet use at best-all my settings were corrrect- i called tech support and i think i can honestly say i knew more about the router than he did-in the end i was told that "2 people cannot play the same game over the internet on a router"-WRONG! thats what it is optimum for!(besides having done so on my friends' numerous times. at one point my friend and i actually WERE playing online with the netgear(for a few short minutes) then it cut out again-i told the gentlemen this and he said he was "very suprised i was able to do that"-!!!!!! i got off the phone, took the router back, and exchanged it for a d-link 604-no problems since.-i would stay away from this product-maybe mine was just defective(i mentioned that over the phone and was promptly told "no"), but if you buy one and have problems-good luck on getting any help!
