Duration of ownership: 1 Years
Strengths: Even looking at what is out there new this laptop still has enough horsepower to match or beat half on the market. Lots of config options
Weaknesses:It does run pretty hot so a cooling pad might be a good idea to buy. USB is 1.1 but easily remedied with a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card.
Overall Evaluation: Having owned this laptop for over a year I am still extremely pleased with how it performs. I upgraded the DVD and the memory (from 256 to 512) when I first bought it. I was pleasantly surprised when I found through some net surfing how much you can add and customize to your needs. I dont always need the DVD so I bought a factory adapter that lets me install a second hard drive where the DVD goes and I can hot swap them under XP! The video memory might be small compared to today's standard (ATI 35 meg) but I recently installed a game (guildwars nightfall) that according to minimum specs I should not be able to play but it plays great! I have never had to repair anything as of this writing but I have found literally every part of this laptop that I could build one complete if need be from online parts sales and they are VERY resonable anywhere i have looked so you don't have to sell your blood to afford the parts.I was also pleasantly surprized to learn that every dell has an ID tag that you can enter into the dell support site and get all the drivers and info you could want on your specific machine. I now have detailed instructions for repairing EVERYTHING in this laptop.IF I need to buy another laptop anytime soon I will buy another C640. The pluses well outweight the minuses at least at this time in computing.

Strengths: CPU, and graphics
Weaknesses:Gets HOT when sitting on your lap.
Overall Evaluation: I have used a C640 for 2 years and it is dramatically better than the C610. The graphics card was very good when first released, but would now be weak for gaming. The internal wireless card (G) gets great signal strength. With upgrades to the memory and Hard drive this is still a very good machine. This has the original P4 CPU which gets hotter than the Pentium M.
