Linksys CM100 Cable Modem

Duration of ownership: 10 Weeks
Strengths: Compact(4.75?x4.75?x1?) and easy to setup; no built-in switches; reliable - no drop connection since place in service in July, 2008; affordable price.
Weaknesses:A stable vertical stand would make it more stylish and space saving; has only one Ethernet and USB port which limit its use on multiple PCs/laptops without a wireless router.
Overall Evaluation: This cable modem is designed with focus on style, size, and simplicity in installation. Even amateur like me has no trouble in setting it up right the first time. The instruction is clear and precise. The modem has only three lines to connect to, power, cable, and router/PC/Laptop. Upload and download speed is decent and performance is consistent and reliable. It runs much cooler than its predecessor, a Siemens SpeedStream 4100 DSL modem from SBC. Price is reasonable as I purchased it on sale. I strongly recommend this modem.

Strengths: Reliable, fast, small footprint, very easy to set up.
Weaknesses:None so far.
Overall Evaluation: I just switched to cable internet service, was using DSL for the past two years. The speed, esp d/l speed is faster, and this modem doesn't disappoint me. It was set up by the cable guy, who merely wrote down the s/n, mac id, etc, and plug in the cables then it's done! I connected my router to it and it only took two secs to recognize this modem and my network is set up already! I've been runing this cable modem for a week now, and it didn't have any hiccups yet, hope that it can maintain this way. The cable modem is very small, and kinda good looking in the living room. I tested its speed from dslreports, and the real achieved speed is very close to the standard labeled speed from the cable company. I'm very happy with this purchase, and would recommend to others who're also looking for one.

Overall Evaluation: This is an excellent and modern modem from Linksys. I bought this to replace a 5 year old Linksys cable modem. Installation of the new modem is very easy, the longest part is waiting on hold when you call the cable company to give them the new MAC address (clearly labeled on the modem). There are 3 things you need to plug in - power, cable, and a network cable. The instructions that come with the modem are clear and will guide you thru the process. If you have your modem next to your PC, this case will either fit nicely behind your monitor, or not look out of place sitting next to it. Upload and download speeds are better than the old Linksys, which was one of my reasons for upgrading. This is a great deal when you purchase it at retail, and if your cable company gives you any incentives when you sign up, this modem is a steal. If you're looking for a new modem for new service, or for an upgrade for an older modem, the Linksys CM100 is a great modem. Highly Recommended.

Strengths: Small footprint. Very easy setup. Modem status and diagnostics available. No dropped connections.
Weaknesses:Nothing major.
Overall Evaluation: I bought this modem to replace a dead Motorola cable modem. I needed it quick that day and the local Best Buy store had it on the shelf. (As it was the ONLY cable modem on the shelf I was sort of stuck, but I knew Linksys made decent products so I went with it.)I was surprised when I took it out of the box as it was so small, only about 4.5" x 4.5" and 1" thick. This worked out great as I placed it in a spot just behind my LCD monitor which freed up some desk space.Followed the setup instructions, called Cox Cable to get it registered and I was up and running. The hold time on the phone far exceeded the actual install time. The startup time of this modem is much faster than the Motorola. I was used to seeing green lights and an amber "link" light on the Motorola, but all the lights on the Linksys are green. Just a minor learning detail that I'm used to now.Upload/Download speed is as good or better than the Motorola. It also runs much cooler, just barely warm to the touch.I definitely would recommend this modem if you're in the market for a new one.

Strengths: No signal dropping. Easy setup.Small and compact.
Weaknesses:None.
Overall Evaluation: I was using a rental modem from Charter Pipeline and paying monthly for it. I saw this modem on sale and decided I would give it a try to save the money from the rental fee. It took about 5 minutes to get it all setup, and that includes the automated part through Charter. It has not dropped my signal at all. The design is very small and matches my Linksys router. I highly recommend this modem to anyone who is looking for a fast reliable modem.
