Linksys's powerline networking kit performs much the same as the other five HomePlug AV kits we looked at during the same review period (among them, the Belkin Powerline AV+ Starter Kit F5D407 and the Netgear XAVB101 Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit), providing reliable high-definition video streaming with sustained throughput of approximately 60 mbps. It provides a convenient, plug-and-play way to hook up home theaters without running ethernet wiring all over the place or putting undue strain on your Wi-Fi network.

Duration of ownership: 30 Days
Strengths: Plug and Play as long as you can use default security.
Weaknesses:Security setup can be a little tricky.
Overall Evaluation: Nice "plug and play" product for a home owner with no big concern about security or shared wiring with other home owners. More tricky for apartment dwellers who may need to change default password to provide some security. For me these units worked right out of the box. I did try to set my own passwords but ran into a little difficulty and decided to go back to using the default configuration. Download the Cisco utility program from www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/support/PLK300/download and use it to set or reset passwords. The program identifies itself as belonging to the PLE200 device but it works fine for both the PLE300 and PLS300 devices which make up this PLK300 kit. I was concerned about performance across circuit breakers because my router is not on the same power circuit as the computers and satellite receiver which I have connected in other rooms. I have not tried to measure the performance but I am happy with it. I doubt that I get the full 200 Mbps (100 Mbps duplex) but I can tell you that my connections are fine for all my needs including my VPN connection for remote office work which was very problematic with my old wireless connection.
