Strengths: Firewall, Endpoint to Endpoint
Weaknesses:Client To Endpoint
Overall Evaluation: If your going to use the client software do yourself a favor...don't! Tech support was very, very poor. It's not like I don't have experience setting up VPN's. I've done my share of VPN tunnels and firewalls. This unit does very nicely as an inexpensive firewall, but it's the pits for the VPN. Also the client software (an additional $40) is always running on your tray. There is no way to shut the client down. If you don't set it for manual it will always try to connect whenever you turn your laptop on. Very annoying for a roaming client. In addition the client has no wizard and is very difficult to deal with because the options on the client are not the same as on the endpoint router. According to the doc's it is only compatible with their client...another drawback.

Strengths: features are good for a low cost item. NetGear is usually a good name.
Weaknesses:Ours broke after a year of use- less than 1 week after the warranty expired.
Overall Evaluation: We had happily used this router for near a year, and was happy with its VPN login that way our IT could fix it remotely (Our IT guy lives 500 miles away). It was very useful, but started having issues with certain computers and certain sites on the internet. It would boot everyone off the network, and require to be reset every few minutes when one of the problem computers attempted to use the internet, or when one of the problem sites was used. When replaced with a new one, none of these problems occured.

Strengths: size and umm... i suppose the reliability -- so far it's been running solid
Weaknesses:VPN is a marketing slogan. To use VPN, you need to buy 40 bucks per license software. Overpriced -- 70 bucks gets you much more elsewhere.
Overall Evaluation: Other than the capacity to add VPN clients (at additional cost - 40 bucks per user license) this router is nothing extraordinary -- it works, but so do others for less. The OS is the same as the one included in cheaper wireless routers. I have been quite disappointed with the speed of the OS when configuring the router -- it takes solid few seconds to load up the configuration (my linksys does it in a blitz). The 4 ports are bit limiting. If you plan on running a small office 4 ports is not enough -- you'll end up paying for extra hubs or switches to extend the capacity since this one does not include a wireless access point. As such, this is really a home router and IMHO, the package is bit overpriced (so I have returned mine).

Overall Evaluation: If you are looking for a powerful, feature-filled firewall router for a small office or home office AND don't need wireless built-in, then think twice about passing this one up! I have this installed at my office with a server and a few PCs behind it and it does all I need including SPI firewall, port forwarding, even has IPSec VPN built-in with client software available. that and much more for under $100.! I have a client using this as well with 10 PCs connected and runs very stable. As with all Netgear products, make sure to update the firmware before using, even if new. Support can be shady, but those familiar with hardware firewall features should have no problems.
