Strengths: Crash your system! Can use it to kill time!
Weaknesses: Make noise, won't boot!Replacment drive crashed my system!
Overall Evaluation: Got the 1st 1 about 4 month, I used it for video recording. It's make weird noise and die after like 3 hours.Send it back to manufacture, and got my replacement slowly. It crashed my system right after the window loaded! It was critical error, a blue screen popped, told me to take it out! After it detached, everything works fine!Waste of time & money, never worked and it's not cheap! So far Western digital work the best (not even Maxtor)Never touch Hitachi unless you are boring!Good luck!

Strengths: Quiet, easy setup, low price, excellent warranty
Weaknesses: None so far
Overall Evaluation: I own several Desktar (IBM/Hitachi) drives, and they are all still working today.I was looking for a low-cost IDE drive to mount into an existing enclosure, and this drive ($95 after rebate) was the best value I found in early July 2005.

Strengths: 3 year warranty.
Weaknesses: None
Overall Evaluation: I don't think hard drives are that different from each other for most of the consumers. Noise level, life span, error rate, etc are all matters of luck sometimes. I have owned many hard drives from different manufacturers, and the performance for each and every one (with comparable size, format, cache, etc) were almost the same. Even with 3-year-warranty, which is good, you still have to backup your data regularly.

Strengths: Capacity, Quiet
Weaknesses: None
Overall Evaluation: Purchased this driver mainly for HDTV recording. With 8GB video data per hour, you are going to need as many space as you can afford. So you can record around 30 hours HDTV program with 250 GB capacity. Drive is fairly quiet comparing to my other Maxtor drives. This is my first Hitachi brand drive. Will recommend to others.

Duration of ownership:7 Days
Strengths: Not to noisy; fast; and 3 year warranty!
Weaknesses: ATA100, Not ATA133; a little bit expensive; A little bit hot in the external enclosure!
Overall Evaluation: Overall, it is a good buy especially for the 3 year warranty. I am using it in a external enclosure which works just fine. Feel a little bit too warm but has similar experience for other drives, might just be normal.

Duration of ownership:20 Days
Strengths: Size, Speed, Cost, Warranty.
Weaknesses:
Overall Evaluation: This is a good drive that has ample storage space and works at good speed (7200 rpm). Installation is fairly straight forward and the drive is backed by a good 3 year warranty. Hitachi is a well known brand and the drive has worked as advertised so far. It is very quiet unlike some Maxtor drives.

Strengths: fast, relatively quiet, not too hot when active, 3 years warranty
Weaknesses: has the same layout as the problematic ibm deskstar hd
Overall Evaluation: not much to say here. the now hitachi drive still resembles the look of ibm deskstar hardrive that many people have cursed. this 250GB drive works like it supposed to. fast, quiet, and warm to touch, what more can you ask for from a harddrive. have no problem using it in an external enclosure with active cooling. unfortunately, i do not have any passive cooling enclosure so can not comment on that. as far as i can feel, the temperature on this drive is a lot lower than maxtor ata133 drives.

Strengths: Fast, quiet, runs coolIBM backing
Weaknesses: None yet
Overall Evaluation: I have three Hitachi drives and they work as well as you would expect coming from one of the top names. It performs on average but not spectacular. It is rated as the fastest drive I believe on many Internet websites. At 7200RPM though its hard to notice any speed difference from the other brands. Since they are all priced the same it just comes down to who you trust. IBM is a good one. If you are looking for a solid drive with a pretty long warranty then this one is a good choice.

Strengths: Size, speed, price after rebate
Weaknesses: Runs a little warm
Overall Evaluation: Got a great deal on this drive ($70 AR). Replaced a 120GB 8MB cache WD drive. I haven't run any utilities to compare the speeds but this drive is noticeably faster when doing copies & erasing (using eraser.exe) of data. Runs alittle warm but not excessively.

Strengths: The quietest drive I have ever owned. Harddrive management software that come with it.
Weaknesses: None so far
Overall Evaluation: I bought this drive to put it a external enclosure. The drive is very very quiet. The software is very nice. you can do anything with the drive, such as partitioning, formatting, etc. You can also do the same with other drives. This is a very good drive.
