Updated:02-22-07
Duration of ownership:
Strengths: Quite complete, offers advice, contains all the forms needed
Weaknesses: Forms don't exactly match printed versions from the IRS. We had trouble finding where to enter certain things.
Overall Evaluation: We used TurboTax after roughing out the taxes ourselves. The program didn't discover anything we had missed, but it took us quite a while to get it to produce the same results we had obtained by hand. Programs like this, because they are complete, force you to consider many situations irrelevant to your case, but it sometimes takes time to figure out that they're irrelevant. I'd say it's worth using this program once to check that you're doing everything correctly, but thereafter you can probably do as good a job yourself.

Duration of ownership:
Strengths: easier to fill than TaxCut: better interface, clearer questions
Weaknesses: miscalculated my taxes by $3 (minor), wrongly told me I have to do estimated tax payments next year (major)
Overall Evaluation: I have been a TaxCut user for several years. Last year (2004 tax year) I tried the web version of TurboTax. I thought Turbotax questionnaire was more user-friendly and easier to complete. I liked the interface better too. This tax year (2005) I purchased the standalone version if TurboTax. I still like the interface and the questionnaire better than TaxCut. But there were two problems. TaxCut miscalculated my tax owed by $3. And it wrongly told me I have to do estimated taxes next year. I ended up doing my taxes in TaxCut and will buy TaxCut next year again.

Duration of ownership:
Strengths: Makes filing a tax return easier.
Weaknesses: I haven't found any.
Overall Evaluation: I've always done my own tax returns since I began with 1964's filing when I dropped out of school in the eighth grade and began my first job. Contrary to most people's conception, the tax forms and rules are easy to understand and use. However, five or six years ago I descovered TurboTax and find it very easy to use. I've recommended it to all my friends who find filing their own tax return too intimidating to try without help. The 2005 version has new features that tell you the entries you made the year before. I like that! Also, I've found that by using the e-file I get my refund in less than a week.

Duration of ownership:30 Days
Strengths: All in one. Makes deductions and the entire tax process very easy. Quick tech support responses, even at the height of the tax season.
Weaknesses: Make sure your state is ready before you file federal; if you don't, you'll have to mail the state. Had an error in the update process that required manual updates. "It's Deductible" not for Macs.
Overall Evaluation: Since TaxCut is gone, this is pretty much it. Thank God it's a (mostly) stable program with good guides and good tech support. As a bit of advice, if you have tech support questions, go ahead and use email; they'll get back to you in a day, and it's easier than waiting in their online queue for someone -- the wait was over two hours.
