  Strengths: For the camera body, D200 is the hands down best one in its class. It's fast, reliable and solid. As it's a Nikon, it also holds its value. High performance lens. Bang of your buck.

  Weaknesses: The zoom range of the lens is not enough by today's standard. No wireless remote for D200.

  Overall Evaluation: I've been using Nikon SLRs for over 10 years from their film lines to the digital ones. The D200 and 17-80mm kit is the best one I've ever used. D200 is loaded with the most advanced technologies available. It's probably overkill for normal photography tasks. It's solid as a rock. The size is perfect, and fits my hand like a glove. The shutter is not as noisy as D70. The large LCD is really nice. Checking image details using the zoom function is much faster than D70. Continuous shooting is super fast, probably more than you will ever need. Don't believe the misconception that more mega pixel is better. More pixel on the same size sensor means smaller pixel and lower per-pixel quality. D200's 10.2 MP sensor is perfect. Larger pixel count just increase storage space and processing time. You won't notice any difference in real life. Now, to the lens. Unlike other kit lenses on the market, this one is a high-quality lens. It uses several modern technologies to improve the image quality. As a result, it produces extremely sharp images throughout the zoom range. The ultrasonic wave motor is virtually silent, and super fast. Although the zoom range is not large by today's standard, the lens is compact and very easy to carry around.

  Strengths: Controls are easy to get to and adjust-very fast!, 5 fps, 4 programable shooting modes, the ability to shoot double exposures and do image overlays in camera, Black and White. I could go on & on

  Weaknesses: Not really a weakness, I would like to see Nikon have less noise at ISO 1000-3200. This is not a major issue just nit picky. GO NIKON!!!!

  Overall Evaluation: I'll get the negative out of the way- noise at high iso's is not bad, looks like film grain only much better. it's definitely a winner! Look at the competitors prices dropping, that says so much! Now, on to the D200. Wow what a great camera, I HIGHLY recommend it!!! You'll want to use the best lenses, 50mm f/1.4, 1.8, 17-55mm f/2.8, 17-35mm f2.8, 70-200mm f/2.8, 85 f/ 1.8-1.4- you get the idea! The kit lens is good, as is the 18-200mm VR, don't get me wrong, I'm not dogging anyones glass. I can tell you the above lenses work great with this body.There are so many options (settings) with this body you can achieve whatever you like. You can fine adjust everything, even the rotational direction of the main command and sub-command dials, also the D-pad.This camera is feature rich to the point you'll probably never use all the features, however, it's nice to know your not limited. It's very quick and has a large buffer, so 5 fps is not a problem, the CAM 1000 11 point AF is sharp and accurate even in low light. If you take a bad exposure with this camera it's your fault!If your new to DSLR consider a entry level DSLR. There are no mode dial pre-sets for point and shoot, some folks get real upset about that, the D200 is more of a "Pro" than a "Pro-sumer" body. Yes you can put it in Program mode and shoot away but this camera won't shine until you learn how to use it. I spent 2 years w/my D70 and did a great deal of study online, in forums and with the D70 guide. With that being said, I was able to walk in with my new D200 and function fairly well with it.... YES, I'm still learning!The view finder is just terrific, it's a great improvement over the D50, D70 (S) & the D80.The main reason I switched from the D70 to the D200 was for the AF, build quality, slightly higher resolution and the 5 fps. The D70 is a great camera!This camera body balances so well w/my 70-200mm f/2.8 VR lens I can't even fathom how someone can even come up with the words, "it's heavy", This camera has necessary heft, it's truly wonderful to hold and handle, comparing the D200 to any other units makes them feel like toys, it's very solid.Make sure you handle this body before you buy. For those of you who appreciate quality you will definitely feel it with the D200!The new display is a very nice addition, it's big very clear, sharp and bright even in sunlight, I like being able to check the histogram in RGB, shooting data and pick which functions I want to display and those I don't. The zoom in feature is also very nice.Battery life is so, so, not a big deal to me, I have the MB-200 vertical grip w/two batteries. I do like the battery meter that shows the percentage and quality of the battery- Very Cool!!!I like the ISO in the view finder, it's nice to see everything you need.The 3 kings cluster (white balance, ISO and quality) with the mode dial are neatly situated on the top left side for rapid adjustments. I use Preset white balance with my Expo-disc, it's so easy and fast.The onboard flash is very good, just don't expect to reach out beyond 10 feet and achieve miracles. I do like the ability to slave a SB-600 or SB-800 with the commander mode using the onboard flash- If you had 4- SB-600or SB-800 flashes you could have a light weight run and gun studio. That's pretty awesome!I've had my D200 for about 2 months now, I've encountered no problems at all. So, if you read some really negative review about the D200 it's either an isolated problem or operator error,

  Strengths: 10 MP in a body that feels and reacts like a real camera. No shutter lag and beautiful pix.

  Weaknesses: It's expensive, but in this case, you get what you've paid for.

  Overall Evaluation: I went in to a camera shop to compare the D70 and 20D. Then I picked up a D200 and fell in love the way I did 30 years ago with my first Nikon SLR. I've been waiting for a digital camera that felt and worked like my old films SLRs. The D200 is that and more. I love it.

  Strengths: Fast, big LCD screen, lots of features, reasonably priced!!

  Weaknesses: High energy consumption, heavier and bigger then previous models(D-100, D-70, D-50)!!

  Overall Evaluation: About two months ago I wanted to upgrade from the Nikon D-100 and based on what I read I decided to go with the D-200. I am very happy I went with the choice. The camera shoots extremely fast, much faster then the D-100 or D-70. It has a much bigger LCD on the back. I just used my older D-100 the other day and I couldn't get used to looking at such a small image on the LCD. I guess I am spoiled. It is loaded with many features that I am still learning how to use. The one feature I like is a real-time battery remaining indicator. It will say 78% or 45% or whatever. It is much easier to figure out how much time you have left on your battery then on those other Nikon's I mentioned above. One thing you have to think about getting is the MB-D200 battery pack, especially if you shoot with your camera heavily, like I do. You really need to have two batteries in this camera because it drains battery power pretty quickly.

  Overall Evaluation: The pictures are great but really it is about getting to the picture that makes the diffrence with this camera. easy access to any commonly changed feature like wb, iso, file size and type, metering, focus point, shooting speed, ect...you will find joy again in shooting with this camera. I can only say if you have ever owed a 6006 or an 8008s and you enjoyed those film cameras...welcome home...finally a digital that feels and shoots like a film ...really its seamless...so far nothing and I mean nothing to complain about...

  Strengths: faster than my D50, many new features, pic crystal clear, now need to buy the VRII lense.

  Weaknesses: a little heavy, kind of like an upgrade from D70... does not have SD memory support.

  Overall Evaluation: so far, so good, once I get my hand on the VRII lense, this should be super good. other than a little heavy, its find. Do not use on a MicroDrive, its will drain the battery very faster.

  Strengths: Shoots in both RAW and fine JPEG at the same time, if desired, so that photographer has a ready finished image while still having RAW to work with on computer. Accepts most Nikon lenses, even manual.

  Weaknesses: Many accessories are hard to find due to extensive demand.

  Overall Evaluation: Menu and image playback field is big and very easy to see and read, as well as protected with cover, which is easy to see through, so no need to take it off. Image quality is exceptional, good enough for pro print work. Color temperature can be set in Kelvin, eliminating need for color filters - it's useful to purchase a color meter so you can input the temperature if you shoot a lot where filters are necessary. Autofocus is smooth, with many options. Camera is well-organized and intuitive, with most-used buttons accessible. Easy to use from the get-go, and it's obvious that there are many dimensions to more powerful usage controls as you go along and learn more. I purchased this camera/lens package because the body only was not available; the zoom lens is good, but I would have rather saved the $300 dollars extra to put toward a better, perhaps VR, lens. Works well with manual 105mm macro lens. Exceptionally well balanced camera, wonderful to hold and grip.

  Strengths: Fast, accurate, strong, light, big LCD, great controls, intuitive layout, reasonably priced.

  Weaknesses: noise at high ISO

  Overall Evaluation: I love this new camera. I only shoot for fun, but I have owned almost every Nikon SLR (and several of the small digital ones) made for the past 35 years. This is my favorite. Traded in my D70 (which I loved too) for this because of the increased resolution and speed. I am not disappointed, it is even better than I had hoped. Super fast focus, GREAT controls, bigger LCD screen, usable enlargement, great exposure control, coupled with Nikkor's great lenses make it a joy to use. I was recently in China at Xian, and shot the Terracotta Army with it. No flashes are allowed, and the lighting is sort of like a 25 Watt orange light bulb in an enclosed football stadium. Shot ASA 1600, 80-200VR lens (with doubler on some close ups) Adjusted white balance until I matched what I saw in the LCD and got some wonderful shots. You are going to get noise at 1600, but the photos are very usable (much better than the cheap postcards they sell). I also shot a swim meet with the same lens (which has an image stabilizer built in) and used the 5 frame per second and instant focus features. Memorable photos of my kids. I'm stoked! Nikon's flash system is also worth a note. It is very good. If you like digital photography, this new Nikon will help you realize the potential of the medium, not just frustrate you because you missed the shot you wanted, wern't sure of your set up, or couldn't enlarge it because it was too blurry.

  Strengths: Super fast auto focus. Professionally solid built.

  Weaknesses: Exhibition of banding (stripping, corduroy?) when taking picture of contrasty bright source (like a halogen light) under extreme condition (ISO 400 and Noise Reduction Off.)

  Overall Evaluation: The Nikon D200 camera body and 18-70mm lens kit is an absolute delight even for a photography novice like me. This camera will surely satisfy users ranging from beginning amateurs to semi-professionals. I have the Nikon Coolpix 8800 and having acquiring this nice DSLR combo is a major upgrade. With the D200, I enjoy the almost instant auto focus acquisition. This is no kidding point-and-shoot capability. The zoom ring on the lens is clearly superior to the rocking zoom button on most fixed-lens digital camera. No longer I have to wait for the camera to whine in trying to fix on an object. Personal photography can?t get any better than this. This baby records gorgeous pictures. Recommended with pleasure.
