Overall Evaluation: I just got this drive from Outpost.com and plugged it into my 1st computer as a slave to my Western Digital 120G hard drive. I turned it on and the lights on my computer flickered and triggered a fuse. I smelled something burning. It was my Western Digital drive. Now, my computer would freeze during bios bootstrap if the WD is plugged in. I thought that might have been an anomaly. So I decided to try it on my second computer. I unhooked all my other hard drives (UATA & SATA) and dvdrw drives. I set the seagate drive as the master via cable select. I inserted the EIDE1 master UATA ribbon and turned the computer on. Sparks came out of the Seagate drive for about 2 seconds. It triggered the power supply fuse and powered down. I pressed the power button on my computer, nothing. I waited about an hour and retried. The power came on. I plugged all my HD and DVDRW drives back. My second computer did not suffer any damages. Thank God. I have one 160G Barracuda and many Seagate Cheetah (SCSI) drives with no problems. I must got a lemon. Be careful!

Overall Evaluation: I have 4 of them in my file server. All work well 24/7 for 4 month. They are faster then WD drives and not so hot. Rotating parts are typically well balanced, no noticeable vibration in a contrast to WD drives. I recommend those drives for server use.

Strengths: Fast, quiet, large capacity for price, great file transfer program
Weaknesses: None, so far
Overall Evaluation: I purchased this from Outpost for $69 after $50 MIR, and installed it on my Dimension 4600 (it replaced an 80gb drive by Seagate) and I was pleasantly surprised to find that for certain tasks like DVR recording, video processing files, and DVD burning, the performance quadrupled. For example, it used to take about 1 to 2 hours for Nerovission express to process the tv shows I recorded using BeyondTV, and now it takes less than 1/2 an hour. The processing increased from about 1000 kbs to over 4000 kbs. All thanks to the upgrade. I don't know how it works, but I am very happy with this drive. Also, I received very quick and clear support from Seagate when transfering my files from the old drive to the new one, OS and all.

Duration of ownership:3 Months
Strengths: Quiet. Large capacity. 5 year warranty.
Weaknesses: Not the fastest access time or inteface speed (ATA/100)
Overall Evaluation: This is the second Seagate drive that I bought as a replacement for the drive in my game console. I first bought the 160 GB model and liked it so much that I bought this 200 GB model a couple of weeks later. Both drives have worked reliably for more than three months now.Since the drive only has an ATA/100 interface, it is obviously not the fastest drive on the market. But for the application that I use it for, it doesn't matter. And anyway, the 8 MB cache is just as large as the best drives, which is important. By the way, the 5 year warranty is retroactive for all puchases made after July 26, 2004. Even if the store or the packaging says otherwise, you still get the 5 year warranty. This is really important as I had several Western Digital drives and even one Maxtor drive crash on me in recent years.

Strengths: Quiet for 7200RPM, better packaging than what the WD drives come in, large capacity, 5 year warranty, comes with a 40 pin / 80 wire cable and mounting screws.
Weaknesses: Unless you believe there's much of a difference between ATA100 & ATA133, then really there isn't much weakness here.
Overall Evaluation: Drive installed with XP SP2 no problem, and was quicker than my previous install using a Western Digital WD2000JB. Drive is very quiet in contrast to both the WD and Maxtor 7200RPM drives I have in other systems. Also comes with BounceBack Express backup software ... but I have not tried it yet, and cannot comment on how well it may work, but there are some good opinions of it if you search the net. Best part so far was that I got it for about .35¢/GB, a great bargain. Seagate has also gone to a 5 year warranty on this drive. Strengths: Newly extended 5 year warranty and great price.
Weaknesses: retail kit does not have 5.25 in drive adapter rails
Overall Evaluation: Bought drive at a great price at a local store during labor day sale. Surprised to read that the manufacturer extended the warranty to 5 years as of July 2004. ATA 100, IDE and 8MB ensure backward compatibility. A stellar expansion of storage.

Strengths: Fast, quiet, reliable
Weaknesses: Only 1 year warranty
Overall Evaluation: Excellent return for the price you pay. It seems huge hard drives are finally approaching an affordable level these days. This Seagate hard drive has a great capacity (all hard drives you purchase nowadays should be 200GB or greater anyway, since even large capacity drives are only .50 cents a gig). I've had plenty of experience installing and testing out various hard drives. Of all the ones I've tried (Maxtor, Western Digital, Seagate), the Seagate drives were the only ones that never failed on me. Great & reliable. Let's hope this track record continues with this new drive I just got.
