    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: nice color and relatively fast

    Weaknesses: squeaky noise while printing

Overall Evaluation: it either needs some well placed few drops of oil somewhere inside or a plate of canary bird seed placed nearby to quiet down the increasingly annoying canary like squeaking that occurs when printing. i read a review just before i bought the hp2605dn about a month ago that mentioned the annoying squeaking that the printer emitted but i thought i could get by it > it is getting worse (i think) and it IS getting more annoying. is there a fix?? i like the printing results but the squeaking has got to go.

    Strengths: Excellent Machine

    Weaknesses: NA

Overall Evaluation: Love it .... very fast, nice to look at ... and the reliability of HP. Excellent performance and when you purchase from staples you can get an extended warranty for only 40 bucks...which will cover you for another 2 years. Toners come in bundles ... but they said the starter kit should last 6 months to a year

Strengths: Simple set-up, very nice quality printing, both black and white and color, convenient to print envelopes, separate sheets with the front loading slot, relatively small footprint.

Weaknesses: there appear to be some pauses when printing multiple page PDF files, but not enough to bother us.

Overall Evaluation: This is a very nicely designed printer, that appears to live up to the long time reputation of HP for quality and smart design. I looked at a number of other printers and am very happy I selected this one. I was delighted that the installation was so easy because my old color printer (an Oki) had just gotten worse and worse and we needed high quality color printing immediately. It starts up quickly and prints clearly even after sitting idle over a weekend, which is quite different from our old printer. And I am sure I will discover more capabilities when I can take time to read the manual - which I have not yet done!

Strengths: Image quality in B&W and color; good paper handling; Ethernet and USB interfaces; real duplexing; ease of cartridge replacement; good status-monitoring software; relatively small and light; low price.

Weaknesses: Not really built "like a tank", so maybe not rugged enough for some places; can really use more memory out of the box; no speed demon, except in comparison to inkjets!

Overall Evaluation: My overall impression of this printer is that HP made a lot of very good trade-offs when designing this machine. Yes, a dedicated photo-quality inkjet or dye-sublimation printer can still produce more perfect photographs, and one might carp about the HP's weight or its size or its speed or its perceived ruggedness - all pretty subjective anyway - but in the end HP hit a good balance: The 2605DN is a very good printer for the home user or a small office or workgroup. It produces great color images if you use heavier weight paper, its B&W text is just as good as any other laser printer's, and its duplexing abilities are perfect for most of the sorts of documents - brochures, flyers, booklets - serious users are likely to produce. If the task is to produce documents and handouts instead of framed art, it's hard to imagine a more practical printer. Amazing value for the money.

Strengths: Excellent color. Quick to print. Small footprint. Quiet.

Weaknesses: Printer is a bit pricey, but not too bad. Toner cartridges are also a bit pricey (watch for sales).

Overall Evaluation: I bought this printer to replace my DeskJet 970cxi over a month ago, though I only recently swapped out the printer. When I first turned it on and printed a test page, I noticed a black blob every inch or so down the page - but just in one location on the paper (vertical blobs). This occurred on the first several pages. So I turned to the printing wizard for help and found that there is a brush of some sort that is attached near the top paper exit - just above the top toner. Per the instructions I moved this brush back and fourth 5 times (as directed). When the next pages printed, they were clean as a bell. Don't know what that blob was, but I'm glad it's gone. This printer prints clean and crisp. It is a joy to use. When not printing, you would be hard pressed to know that the printer is even turned on as it is very quiet. A feature not to be overlooked. I use my printer(s) to print envelopes and the difference is noticeable! Highly recommend this printer. Watch the prices (PriceGrabber.com) as it hovers between $450 and $500 at local stores. I purchased locally as I was a bit hesitant to have a printer like this floating around on some big truck - I wondered what that bouncing would do to the equipment :-).

    Duration of ownership:3 Days

Strengths: vivid, accurate color, fast color and mixed output, integrated networking, duplexer, manual feed slot, optional paper tray, quiet, small footprint, light weight, low cost, nice build quality

Weaknesses: inexplicably slow on a few pages, striping/banding, no multi-purpose tray, no backlight on LCD display

Overall Evaluation: I would qualify all of my comments as relating to color laser printers, not to all printers. For example, I said that light weight was a strength, but clearly, a 43.8 lb. weight would only be "light" when compared to other color laser printers. It may also be worth mentioning that I do not have the printer connected directly to any PC, so all of my experience is related to networked installation and printing. One of the "inexplicably slow" pages that I mentioned was the front page at yahoo - it took 11 minutes and 10 seconds to print! This is completely out of line with some of the other pages that I tried. For example, msn printed in about 34 seconds.Full-page photos at 300 dpi (which is about what you would get with a 6 MegaPixel camera) printed from Photoshop CS in about 43 seconds. The horizontal striping that I mentioned is most noticeable when printing photos with rich or dark colors. It is a rather subtle problem, and I did not notice this banding on less dense printouts. Some dithering effects can also be seen, again, most noticeable on photos. For what it's worth, I compared to the same photos printed on a Konica Minolta magicolor 2430DL. By direct comparison, the magicolor did not seem to have the banding problem, although it did have similar dithering artifacts, and the color was less rich and less accurate. The magicolor also has a rougher texture to the printouts that can be easily noticed when the page is held at an angle, so that it reflect a light source. It may also be worth mentioning that the HP printer did not cause power problems, such as making lights on the same circuit flicker and dim, which was a serious problem with the magicolor printer. The power issues would have forced me to install a dedicated electrical circuit for the magicolor, whereas the HP seems perfectly fine on the shared circuit.I mentioned "low noise", but that only hints at what actually happens when one places a color laser printer next to one's desk. This HP is a single-pass printer; so basically, it only "clicks" one time, when it picks up a sheet of paper. By direct comparison, the multi-pass Magicolor 2430DL clicks and clunks four times for every color page that it prints. It shakes whatever the printer is sitting on, such as a desk or stand. It is too loud to use while talking on the phone. The magicolor generates a lot of noise and commotion. In this regard, the HP printer is far more elegant and refined. There is a minimum of clicking/clunking and the operation is smooth. The way that the toner cartridges load is also elegant and the door operates easily. All of this gives me a good feeling about the HP that I did not get with the magicolor. It is as if someone actually tried to use the printer before it was brought to market...hmmm...what a concept!HP's print drivers seem to be more advanced than those for the magicolor - I had to call Konica-Minolta in order to learn how to install the printer in a way that did not cause my PC to hang for seconds at a time.I think that the documentation for both printers could be much better. For example, I believe that the HP supports Postscript, but it is not clear to me how I would use that feature, or whether HP has a Postscript driver for Windows. The quick setup sheet that came with the HP was all but useless, in spite of the fact that it is printed in many languages. In fact, it may be all of those languages that prevented an adequate explanation.Having said that, I could have set up the printer without any instructions at all. Granted, I have a lot of experience with HP printers in a network environment, but this was the first time that I have installed a completely new model laser printer without the need for any documentation at all. Maybe that just means that the printer is so HP-centric that it makes sense to anyone that has used a lot of HP printers. To summarize, for my purposes, the HP 2605DN offers the best mix of design compromise, build quality, features, and performance that is available in it's class. I would like it even better if it did not have the banding problem, but then again, I have seen similar problems on many color laser printers, including some that cost much more than the 2605DN.
