    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Well built, rubbery outer shell, very compact, nice touch screen, bluetooth, voice dialing, good voice quality, relatively fast processor, good battery life.

Weaknesses: No Wifi, no 3G, no EDGE, UI needs further refining, PC interface software buggy, very little software to download, flip is rather difficult to open.

Overall Evaluation: All in all the A1200 (Ming) is a fine product and works well. The Linux OS also works well but the UI needs improvement. For example: you can set tasks in due date order - but the list doesn't show the due date... one has to click on a task to see its due date. Things like this can be easily corrected in a firmware upgrade and one can only hope that such update is in the offing. This holds true also for the PC interface software. If GPRS is good enough for you and you don't require lots of software downloads - it is a very pleasant phone to use - once you master the art of opening the flip!

Strengths: ReceptionCall qualityScreen qualityBuild qualityBluetooth stereo

Weaknesses: Flip can be tough to openSoftware not easy to upgrade like windows mobileNot the easiest phone for people not tech savy

Overall Evaluation: After my first Moto I swore of Motorola forever. When I had problems with my carrier replacing my phone I needed a new one in a pinch. I first bought a Nokia since they had always served me well. The Nokia 3230 was terrible. I next found this one and purchased it without too much thought. It is a great phone, but not the best PDA. If you keep that in mind, you wont be let down. It does the phone thing well, provided you don't miss dedicated buttons. It has the best reception of any phone I have ever owned (and there have been plenty). The acrylic flip sits almost flush with the bottom part of the phone. That makes it tough to open. Most of the time I use a bluetooth headset (I have 5 + 1 bluetooth stereo headset) and it works great with them all. Text is tough to manage with this phone as it has a small touch screen. I don't use recognition so I cannot comment on that. Linux allows people to create applications but those I have found are not the most useful. Since a grip of new phones have been released with that OS we might start to see more useful programs. Then phone can be customized more than most phones but it isn't particularly easy so you must be comfortable with tweaking things.

Strengths: Nice shape. Good looking. Like the touch screen. Simple to use. (no manual needed for me.)

Weaknesses: Cool phone needs more features. The Volume is too low. i cant hear a thing sometime. (better use bluetooth)

Overall Evaluation: Phone is small not that Small but when close its smaller than the blackberry pearl. and its a little thicker than Blackberry pearl. It would be great is the firmware gets update or software automatic.

    Duration of ownership:2 Months

    Strengths: Beautiful, touchscreen, small

Weaknesses: Lots of bugs, user interface is bad, user interface is not flexible, screen scratches easily, flip design make it difficult to open with one hand, 2 pop-up windows appear whenever I make a call.

Overall Evaluation: Don't be lead by the beautiful appearance of this phone and by the fact that it is using Linux-based operating system. The phone software and interface may make you sorry that you bought it (well, I'm not sorry about buying it because this is the only option for small touch-screen phone with flip). Well, were to start ? Take a look at the forums of Motorolafans.com, and see how many issues are involved with this phone, what kind of strange (and sometimes dangerous) hacks you need to do in order to fix some problems, and how many issues are unsolved. This is not how a cellphone should be !!! Here is a short list of some problems: - There is no tool to update the software of the phone, so if Motorola fixes a bug, there is no official way to get the fix.... So you're stuck with what you bought. - Every time that I make a phone call, two (!!) pop-up windows appear on the screen, and freezes everything for several seconds. One of the windows is saying that I have a voice mailbox (who doesn't ? we are in 2007, aren't we?), and the second widow says something that no one understands (I asked in some forums, and nobody have a clue about the meaning of this message). Just imagine, two pop-up windows every time that I make a call !!! Some guys in motorolafans.com have found a solution to the first window - if you disable your voice mail, then the window may disappear (given that your provider let you disable call diverts). Well, so if you don't need a voice mail, this might be the phone for you... - The volume is not sufficient for many users. - The phone internal Opera web browser makes unexpected internal errors in random occasions (on the same web page it might work flawlessly one time, and fail on another). - The interface between the phone dialer and address book is not good. For instance, you can not write a number in the dialer and then store it as a contact without dialing the number first. I can not point on the exact other problems with this issue, but it is definitely less comfortable then other phones that I used. - Scrolling down the list of contacts in address book if very slow - unless you drag the scroll bar with your pen which will scratch the screen. - You can set the email reader not to download large emails. But then it does not even let you know that you received such emails. - The phone (at least mine) reboots itself with no particular reason from time to time. This is not a big deal, but it is definitely strange behavior. - Motorola programmers (not all of them are good according to the results with this phone) set the shortcuts to important applications on the main screen. Their choice of "important" applications is strange however: the video camera got one of the 5 icons. The ring style settings got the second shortcut, etc. You have the choice of changing the shortcuts, but only 2 of the 5. Which means that you will always see the video camera, web browser, and ring style shortcuts on your main screen, but will have to spend much more efforts to access your real favorite applications. - On the main screen there is no indication whether you set up your alarm clock (and, as you may find out in the hard way, in order to complete setting the alarm clock you have to click the appropriate "save" button). - - - You got the idea. There are so much more of those annoying "features", or bugs, or whatever you want to call it. I will just save you the time and stop right here.

Strengths: Good Phone, small, good looks

Weaknesses: Motorola Phone Tools-Sync. with Outlook impossibleSlow handwritting recognition

Overall Evaluation: I bought the phone in search of a smaller alternative to the Palm Treo, being very important for me to be able to sync the phone with Outlook. I invested many hours, got help thru email from the designers of Motorola Phone Tools, Avanquest. It was impossible to make it work consistently or even to get the same live update version every time I uninstalled and re installed the MPh.Tools software. I could not get it to connect to the PC thru the cable, I did it thru bluetooth in a very slow and awkward manner. Such a nightmare that I decided to change the phone. IF YOU WANT TO SYNC WITH OUTLOOK, DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME AS I DID MINE, FORGET IT. If sync. with Outlook is not necessary for you it is a good phone.
