Strengths: Very good image quality, Instant power up, No shutter lag, lightweight and easy to use.Supports ITTL and wireless flash operation.

Weaknesses: There seems to be a realiability issue with cameras produced in the first 6 months of production. Serials seem to start with 300xxx to 700xxx. Search for BGLOD (Blinking green light of death)

Overall Evaluation: I preordered one of the first models to hit the US market in March 2004. I quickly fell in love with this camera as I was very impressed with how it handles, operates, and its image quality. I have made beautiful 18X24 enlargements from this camera that look better than enlargements I got out of a 645 medium format camera 15 or so years ago. The wireless flash system with the SB800s seems to work pretty well too. I have since also bought a D2X as I am starting to do a little professional work for others. While on vacation this past week, my D70 died, so I was forced to use only my D2X. After speaking with someone I met in a used camera store, I first heard of the problems Nikon has been having with the original D70, in that they seem to die just after the warrenty expires. If you read the forums, the problem seems to be related to a faulty circuit board that has been modified on D70 cameras made after Sept 2004. Most of the posts I have seen, Nikon has been quietly fixing these cameras for free after the owners has made a little fuss over it. It seems they try to charge a little over $200 for repairs. I mailed my back to NY and I hope they stand behind it like they have for others. I have always been a fan of Nikon cameras and I have never had any problems with any of them. I think that the D70s may have corrected the problems of the initial run, but only time will tell, as the BGLOD seems to pop up after a year of use. I feel that the D70 is a better camera than the Cannon Rebel, but I know a guy that has the Cannon 20D and loves it. For a little more money, I think if I were buying my system all over again, I would go with the Cannon System. The 20D is about the same price range as the Nikon D100, but has 2 more megapixels. Also, Cannon seems to be on the leading edge right now and has just released a 12.4 megapixel camera that is about $1800 less than Nikon's flagship D2X. The D70 is a fine camera though Nikon seems to have a problem with the initial run. If you are considering one, go with the D70s or make sure the serial number starts with a number higher than 705xxx as these will be of the later runs. For a little more money, consider the Cannon 20D. Cannon does seem to have a superior system right now. I just hope some flaw doesn't show up in my D2X after I have it a while. It was a really expensive camera. I would give my D70 5 stars if there wasn't this known manufacturing/design issue which is affecting the realilability of the original models. Perhaps Nikon has this problem fixed on the newer ones?

    Duration of ownership:6 Months

Strengths: Easy to use camera for anyone who has SLR experience. Photo quality is great.

Weaknesses: Not enough pixels for really large enlargements. I have gotten good 11x14 prints. If it were 12 megapixels - or even 8 megapixels it would be wonderful.

Overall Evaluation: My camera broke down after two months of use and had to be sent into Nikon for repairs. It was gone for 17 days and I was really lost without the camera. Now I am really paranoid about it breaking down again. I am afraid I will be off someplace far from home shooting photos and it will break down again. I think one probably needs a good back-up camera after an experience like that. Back when I used Nikon SLR's I never had a Nikon break down. I still have a dozen Nikon SLR's laying around someplace which very probably work just fine. I had a Nikon lens which had problems and the turnaround on repair was excellent. Service from Nikon is much slower now. This is probably a sign of the times. Customer service suffers in a lot of companies. I think the real dilemma for me, at this stage, is whether to buy a different brand new camera as a back-up or a new Nikon body as a back-up. The dilemma is whether I should buy another Nikon body. It is hard to reward a company by buying another extra body when the reason I might have to do this is that the first body quit working after two months of use. If Nikon's service had been faster this would not be a big dilemma for me. Nikon should be aware that people often come to me for advice on buying a new digital camera and some have shied away from Nikon because of the problem I had and the poor turnaround service.

Strengths: Easy to use, intuitive design, good price, good quality, works with nikon lenses

    Weaknesses: only 6.1 megapixels

Overall Evaluation: I wanted to get a professional DSLR and already have a 35mm Nikon camera with many lenses. I know that Cannon is the cutting edge DSLR company with better quality, but for my purposes, photography is just a hobby, the D70 is perfect. I saved lots of money only having to buy the body and no lenses. I'm very happy with the camera and the quality is great. The prices now for the body only are well worth the equipment.

Strengths: Fantastic camera, crystal clear pictures, love the instant on and no delay between pushing the shutter release and taking the picture. Great battery life, probably get 1,000 pictures on each charge.

Weaknesses: Dust gets into the camera between lens changes no matter how quickly and carefully I change the lens - very difficult to clean the dust out.

Overall Evaluation: I love this camera and especially love to be able to point the camera, push on the shutter release and the picture is taken instantly. Action pictures are phenomenal. I also like the ability to shoot multiple pictures continuously to ensure the best picture. I bought my wife a Coolpix 8700 for a vacation she was taking - the Coolpix 8700 pictures are great but we both hate the long delay between pushing the shutter release to picture being taken, you miss the action by the time the picture is taken and if you are not looking for an action shot, the composition has changed. Dust getting into the D-70 and has been an ongoing problem, wish I had bought a second D-70 instead of the Coolpix 8700 and could have a separate D-70 for each of my two lenses. I hate coming back from a two week trip with 1,000 or 2,000 pictures and finding that half way through the trip I picked up a piece of dust which shows up on all the pictures from then on. Anybody out there at Nikon reading this? I will trade you my 2 month old Coolpix 8700 for another D-70 body. Cleaning the dust out is VERY difficult, the first time I picked up some dust (half way through a 2 week Mexican trip, starting with my pictures of the ruins at Tulum of course) I called the store where I bought the camera and asked them if they could clean it out for me. They told me that the camera needed to be sent off to Nikon for professional cleaning and that it would take approximately 6 weeks. Six hours later I finally managed to get the dust out. The "auto" setting for pictures tends to be too dark and I have set the camera to my own setting on "P". Several other users of the D-70 have told me of the same problem. Despite my complaints, there is no other camera I have seen that I like better. Honey, if you are reading this, buy me a second D-70 body for my birthday.

    Duration of ownership:1 Weeks

Strengths: Great picture quality, no shutter lag, instant power up, continuous shooting without load time, uses the Nikon lenses I already own, simple to operate/simmilar to Nikon film cameras

    Weaknesses: none I have found

Overall Evaluation: Great all around Camera. I used an Olympus DSLR that ran $1500+ a couple years ago, and this camera is 1000x better. Like I said I have not found any weaknesses yet, and I don't really expect too in the future either. It's just a fun camera to use. Also, I do not see any reason to pay more for a D70S. I was considering it because I did not want a "slow" camera. They advertise the S as having improved auto focus, and quicker start up times. But with the updated firmware (both cameras use exactly the same version from what I understand) There are no delays what so ever using an 80X card. I just can't see the S being worth the money, save it go buy another lens or some filters or whatever.

Strengths: This camera takes wonderful pictures. It is easy to use as a point and shoot camera even for an amateur and it has lots of bells and whistles for the professional.

Weaknesses: There is a lot to learn about the bells and whistles.

Overall Evaluation: I am not a professional photographer, but I am able to use this camera successfully. I have used it mostly as a point and shoot camera, but am looking forward to learning more about all its other functions. I purchased it because I have other Nikon cameras and the lenses all interchange.

Strengths: Very fast camera operation, virtually no startup, minimal usage delays. Excellent continuous shooting, great throughput and 'Smart buffering.Very fast CF write performance.

Weaknesses: RAW+JPEG only captures a Basic quality JPEG.USB connection labeled as USB 2 but only supports USB 1.1 transfer speeds.

Overall Evaluation: Overall GREAT camera, had to research and try to find a weakness. I would recommend this camera to anyone entering into the digital realm. The camera is extremely light but is balanced wonderfully. There is no delay from the time the shutter button is pressed to the action of of the shutter. Really gives a mechanical feel to the process. Easy to use menus and functions help to make sure you get the most out of your shots. Highly Recommend buying this camera.

Overall Evaluation: Coming from Coolpix 5700 to D70 is like getting a frog getting out of the well. Before I thought 5700 is good enough. When I got my hands on D70, I realized I have missed out so many precious moments because of the slow focus speed on 5700.Shooting raw on 5700 is possible but too slow when saving so it's pretty much infeasible. But now I am doing RAW+JPEG on D70 which is so great.
