Strengths: do the job, picture looks ok, slim size

Weaknesses: not playing vcd with region lock out from the box,

Overall Evaluation: I use it to play DVD and VCD mainly. Yes, I found the unlock method so it can play VCD and other region DVD. The picture looks good to me via hdmi output which I have no complain for a $20 upconvert player on my 42" HDTV. I bought it in December 2006 and had no problem at all in playing DVD and VCD. I have no regret purchasing this player.

    Strengths: Slim design

Weaknesses: Delay in respond on remote or keys, Not all formats plays, in some cases even freeze. No VCD support

Overall Evaluation: Slim DVD player. Simple to connect and use. Conversion is fine for regular DVDs. For some AVI or MPG files it has some issues, even freeze the picture. No VCD support. Overall, better than old DIVx players, cheap 1080i player.

Strengths: Upconversion, easy setup, divx 6 support

Weaknesses: No HDMI cable enclosed, some DVDs skip

Overall Evaluation: I needed a new DVD player and bought the cheapest one at CircuitCity, but I am really happy with this purchase. The picture is much better than my other DVD player (3-year old). Some DVDs skip and I haven't figured out why. But overall, it is a good DVD player.

Strengths: Thin form factor, compatibility, up converts to 1080i via component, quiet

Weaknesses: Some DVDs skip, motor sometimes grinds, doesn't play SVCD/VCD out of the box.

Overall Evaluation: This player is actually made by LG since they now own Zenith. It is likely same as LG DN191H and uses the new Zoran 888 chipset. That said, it plays every divx/xvid file I've thrown at it and its a lot. Subtitle is nice and easy to read although it could diplay a bit snappier (could be due to transparency effect of the background). It also has long filename support out of the box. Doesn't play SVCD/VCD out of the box but it does after easy hack available on videohelp.com. It upconverts via component but only for backup DVDs or divx/xvid files (not with pressed DVDs). Divx/Xvid/DVD look very nice upconverted to 1080i on my 27" 1080i Panasonic Tau TV. Only minor issue is some pressed DVDs seem to skip here and there like Star Wars Episode I DVD even though there is absolutely 0 scratch. But some movies are fine like Saving Private Ryan. Thing is problem DVD plays fine on my other DVD player. Main reason for purchase was for Divx/Xvid so thats a minor issue for me. I chose this over Philips DVP5960 since my main requirement was 1080i over component since I don't have HDMI on my TV. Philips can only do upconversion via HDMI no matter what is being played. I like the USB support but it seems kinda finicky and I burn all my divx anyways so its not a requirement. Besides, Zenith was cheaper. All in all this player beats the pants off of my 2 year old Philips DVP 642. I know the new 5960 is getting all the attention but I really think the Zenith is under rated.

Strengths: price, hdmi, long filename support for browser

Weaknesses: no upscale for protected dvd via comp, video quality, stutter playback, awkward OSD

Overall Evaluation: I really like the price of this dvd player when i got it. not only does it have hdmi, but also long file name support which is lacking in philips low end dvd/divx player. I almost fell in love with it until the playback start to stutter every few minutes watching any dvd that work perfectly in philips DVP642. Judging from 480P output, the video quality is slightly better than DVP642 and DVP642 is poor at best when watching on 40"+ display. Lastly, the OSD decide to leave out the display of either time elapsed or time remaining and you have to rely on the small lcd display in front of the dvd player for time elapsed. not recommended

Strengths: can be hackable, cheap dvd player

Weaknesses: color fade out worse than my no brand name DVD player.

Overall Evaluation: I was very disappointed in the upconverting capabilities while it was working. Using an HDMI cable, the 1080i HD upconversion looked blurry & worse than my 5-year-old DVD player!

Strengths: DVD Upscaling, HDMI and Component connections, plays Divx

Weaknesses: Doesn't seem to improve the DVD quality even with HDMI connection and 1080i resolution setting

Overall Evaluation: I purchased this Zenith HDMI DVD player a month ago after I purchased my 60 inch Sony HDTV. The DVD player does its job well. It also supports the Divx and Xivd format which is a big plus. While the quality of pictures is better on HDTV in general even with my old DVD player with progressive scan, I expect that this DVD player will be even better. However, I am little disappointed. When I play most DVD movies, I don't see significant improvement for this player over my old one even when I used HDMI cable and set 1080i resolution. I read some other reviews about the HD upscaling, one review says that the upscaling only works for DVD movies without copyright protections. Then I tried some of my home-made videos, I still don't see much improvement with this one. One thing I like about this DVD player is that the movies fill the whole screen, while my old one has black strips on all sides. Overall, this is the cheapest HD upscaling DVD player with HDMI connection. For the price, it is OK buy.

Strengths: cheap, slimline and sleek looking.

Weaknesses: 1. the up-conversion feature did NOT apply to copy protected (most store bought moveies) DVDs. 2. there is no track display when playing audio CDs.

Overall Evaluation: The color and contrast are way too dark and unadjustable through the dvd player settings. If I have to buy an upconverting DVD player again I would go with a Philips or Samsung

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: divx 6 support, long filename support in file mode, large font fordivx subtitle

Weaknesses: freezes on xvid, doesn't read some of dvd+rw, only upscale non-protected dvd via component.

Overall Evaluation: if you are looking for budget upscale dvd player with hdmi, this is it, but don't expect miracle on this player. even though it's listed as dvd+rw readable, i found that it will read only some dvd+rw discs i fed it even from the same spindle, i.e. dvd burned on the same writer with the same exact content. the player will also freeze up several times when play xvid encoded avi and I still don't know whether it's audio compression problem or not. divx playback also cause random hiccups, but not as frequent as xvid. for dvd-video, the upscale function worked as advertised. Even component output can do 1080i, but only for non-protected dvds. recommended

Overall Evaluation: I bought this to be used on my new HDTV and was surprised at the better quality of videos this produces compared to my other progressive scan DVD player. When I bought it I was not sure if I would return it to the store since this as the cheapest up converting DVD player in the market. Now I am keeping it.
