    Overall Rating: 4 Star Review

    Duration of ownership:10 Months

Strengths: Very cool, stable, secure. Runs silently.

Weaknesses: Content filtering slows Internet speed. Firmware upgrade blocks e-mail download (POP3).

Overall Evaluation: I have been using this device for almost a year to connect my two computers to the Internet. Setup is effortless and the settings interface is relatively simple for the beginner. I can leave it "on" for a month and never drop a connection, with no glitches in download speed. It actually improved my cable modem's signal levels and speeded the throughput on my laptop. After removing the lid, I found that the main chip and all other electronics are virtually cool to the touch (chip is only 10 degrees F above ambient when measured with a digital thermometer). The log file is easy to read and blocks six outside port scans a minute with no problems..I have, however, found three minor flaws. 1) If you add a list of restricted web sites to content filtering, download speed is slightly degraded (use a host file through Windows instead). 2) Firmware revision 1.34 blocks my e-mail (POP3) connection after leaving the unit running overnight (use firmware 1.33SU instead). 3) When used as a 100T-base switch, I can only transfer between computers at about 1.25 MBps, even when I activate timestamps in TCP/IP settings on both machines (transfer rate is about 300 KBps when timestamps are not activated). Since a standalone switch (I use Linksys 5-port 10/100 #SD205) can sustain 5.75 MBps, this device clearly cannot be used as a switch.
