    Strengths: Easy to install/use

    Weaknesses: Somewhat pricey

Overall Evaluation: Taxcut is great software. Not only does it make doing your taxes easy, but it helps you to get a greater refund check! Also, if you ever run into problems, "you've got people" in H&R Block.

Strengths: Easy import of previous years, supports imports from other tax programs, deduction calculator finds TONS of deductions I miss, and I know what I am doing

Weaknesses: No longer a free e-file so either buy this version with e-file included for both federal and state, or pay later.

Overall Evaluation: I have been a loyal TxCut user for many years now - a look at my bookshelf shows boxes going back to 1997 - and I have been more and more impressed with every year's new version. One year I thought I would save some money by buying TurboTax on sale and I regretted it immediately. I am not saying this as someone who loves a product and will bash anything that is different - I genuinely could not stand the interface and dummied down input screens that mde it too hard to enter more advanced tax features and deductions that TaxCut lets you quickly switch back and forth from the 1040 and GUI. I have to admit I AM a bit disappointed that back in 2005's filing year they stopped offering a free e-file via rebate and switched to this pay in advance version, but that's the breaks. I normally buy the Federal+State version and just mail in my forms to save the money, but I got a good price on this e-file version this year and was eager to try it out since I already have an adjusted W2. I am happy as always.

    Strengths: Accuracy, help from professionals

Weaknesses: got a different result through turbotax

Overall Evaluation: While for years I have always considered TaxCut to be the better product than TurboTax, this year I input my data into both and TurboTax gives a larger refund amount! Now I have to figure out which is wrong. If you ever need help, it's very easy to do so through H&R Block. That is the main reason I prefer TaxCut. It's a great software with better support.

Strengths: No mail-in rebate for e-file. Easy navigation.

    Weaknesses: None.

Overall Evaluation: I bought Taxcut 2006 because I liked it last year. Data were transferred from last year's Taxcut file easily, which saved some time to input data. It guided every step and I had no trouble filing both federal and state tax. Last year, the fee for e-file had to be claimed by mail-in rebate. However, this year, there was no need to send in mail-in rebate.

Strengths: Relatively easy to use; imports previous year data from otherformats; free eFile; can be installed on more then one computer/laptop

Weaknesses: Printing to PDF does not work as advertised; seems to have some printing problems; investments/capital gains section weak

Overall Evaluation: I used TaxCut for the past couple of years and this version seemed to be working better then the older ones. Because they didn't offer free eFile I bought this one with the eFile offer. I used TurboTax before and I might be biased but the TaxCut capital gain section needs some serious improvements; long/short terms capital gains are somehow difficult to enter and one need to be very careful where they enter the short vs. long terms gains; TaxCut has problems with importing W2s and 1099s and in fact I was unable to import any W2 or 1099; I did this W2/1099 importing in TurboTax before without any issue; if you have a more complicated tax situation with lots of investments and weird deductions TaxCut is not for you. The eFile was painless but after that I tried to print my copy and I could not get the PDF printing to work either although was advertised as a nice feature. Also, during printing TaxCut was getting confused about the number of pages to print and it was showing 5 pages to print but only 3 pages came out of the printer. I believe that the pages coming out were actually the only ones needed but the software was getting confused about how many pages were to print. Overall if the price is right and your taxes are straight forward TaxCut does a fairly good job. I'm not sure what I will do next year...

    Duration of ownership:2 Days

Strengths: Simple, easy to use, straight-forward interface. Includes Federal & State e-file (valued at $31.90). No additional charge for direct deposit.

Weaknesses: Did not automatically save file every few minutes, even though it was set. Did not break down the short & long term capital gains. Doesn't have the option of importing tax data from other websites.

Overall Evaluation: I've been using TaxCut since 2001, with the exception of 2004, which I used TurboTax. I've always liked the fact that TaxCut is made by the folks at H&R Block, which gives me a greater confidence that the software is made accurately. Unlike my experience with TurboTax in prior years, TaxCut's interface has always been straight-forward and simple. It gives the tax filer what he needs and nothing more. When you compare this version's price, you end up saving more than you would with TurboTax, after the price of e-file. What I liked this year was that there wasn't an additional charge for direct deposit as in earlier years. I was disappointed when my computer locked up and I lost all of my data entry, thus I had to start over. TaxCut should have automatically enabled the autosave feature every few minutes, but it did not. Even after I reentered the data, I enabled the autosave feature, but it still did not autosave. When I entered the capital gains from a 1099-B form, it did not allow me to break up the portion that was long-term versus short-term capital gains, and manually trying to enter the information in the long form was unsuccessful. Even with the weaknesses of this software, I was quite pleased and would purchase this software again next year.

Strengths: Very good product with walkthrough and efile.

Weaknesses: The price has raised considerably this year for efile.

Overall Evaluation: This tax season, the price has increased quite a bit for efile. The only other negative I had is that on one of the Tax Id's it said it was incorrect but I double checked it and it was right. I had to send that one in by regular mail. I used to use turbotax until two years ago when I had trouble with the install/compatibility issue and their tech support was useless. The two products are pretty much the same and walk you through your taxes to make it simple. Will purchas again next year.

Strengths: Quick and Easy to use

Weaknesses: No longer 'Free with Rebate'

Overall Evaluation: I've used Tax Cut software for several years and I've always been happy with the ease of the 'interview' style of filling in the forms. In past years you could get the software Free with rebate, but it appears that these offers are over. It's still better than laboring through dozens of paper forms . I'll never go back to paper again!!!
