Strengths: hmdi up converting.cost
Weaknesses: heating.volume scale seems not conventional
Overall Evaluation: this is the first receiver I bought. It works properly with all the functioned I tested. But the volume scale seems strange. I need to increase the volume >50 just for a low volume audio. I first thought my item has defects because I increased the volume to 20 but didn't hear anything. Later I did some research, seems it is normal for this receiver. It is also hot if you used for just half an hour. Although it does not affect the AV output, it still makes me feel the receiver is not best engineered.

Strengths: 2 HDMI - upconverting, great sound, easy setup
Weaknesses: limited upscale on all sources, basic remote, upconverts to 720p not 1080p
Overall Evaluation: Purchased to upgrade from my Sony. This, by far, was a great investment. HDMI 1.3 inputs, great quality, amazing sound. Highly recommended for home theater 7.1 surround sound.

Strengths: SR605 has every option you could want for an under $400 receiver. Satellite radio, AM & FM, all the surround options. Most importantly, it has Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD lossless capabilities!
Weaknesses: Does get hot as a lot of reviews have indicated. Universal remote not the best. More complicated set-up.
Overall Evaluation: Overall, this was an incredible buy for my economical home theater. I purchased teh sr605 mainly because it has the HD sound options, which my PS3 supports with its Blu-Ray player. The video pass-through from HDMI to HDMI looks seamless to me. I have heard the video upconversion is have not noticed it or even used any components where I would. I picked this receiver over the Samsung AS720HTiB, which was my original choice. Aesthetically, the Samsung looked great with my TV, but lacked some many options this receiver contains. Namely, satellite radio, AM, iPod capability, and HD sound. I will eventually get a Logitech Harmony Universal remote, as this one is not the easiest to use. Also, probably should either get a small fan to keep it cool if you place it in a closed cabinet.

Strengths: Not so different from earlier 600 series ones, except HDMI
Weaknesses: just 2 HDMI in, and 2 optical in. Remote is back to basic, without the macros.
Overall Evaluation: Its ok for this price. But 705 has much better features.I dont like the remote. They wantedly cut down the features of remote. The 603x I had before, had more better remote, which they are only offering with 705. This doesnt have fans to cool down the box. No THX.

Duration of ownership:
Strengths: small footprint, nice looking, enough power, eq2 calibration, enough inputs and outputs, future proof, slick design, really nice overall, lossless sound (hd audio) decoding
Weaknesses: video up-conversion to 720p only, no multiEQ, no cooling fans
Overall Evaluation: nice receiver, i paired it with an Infinity tss-1200 speaker package, and it just sounds really phenomenal. i live in an apartment, and did not do the audyssey equalization, but just hooking it up it sounds good. it is well built, it does get warm but nothing like anything else. i wish it had some cooling fans, but it is no complaint. i used the stock wires that came with the speakers, but i recommend buying thicker wires, like 16 or 12 gauge. as i mentioned before, i live in an apartment, but i cannot wait to get a house and test this baby to it's full potential. got it at 6th avenue electronics for 285 bucks brand new. what more would you want? best receiver for the money. Also, only has two hdmi inputs, but how many hdmi sources do you have? a hi-def palyer and that is it (i do not have any game console, so i do not need more than 2). highly recommended

Strengths: * 2 HDMI in / 1 HDMI out (HDMI repeater i.e. passes both audio and video using single cable)* Decodes nearly all latest audio formats.* Audessey automatic speaker setup
Weaknesses: * upconverts only to 720p
Overall Evaluation: The main reason I purchased this receiver was to future proof my home theater. It has the latest version of HDMI spec (1.3) and does pass both audio and video via a single HDMI cable. The price ($340 shipped) I paid at amazon made this receiver even more appealing with all the new features that it provides. This purchase was therefore a no-brainer. For HDMI to HDMI connections, it does not change the input signal just passes it to your TV, so a 1080i input say from your upconverting DVD or HD DVD player will be send unchanged. But if your input component is sending 1080i to the receiver, the Onkyo would down convert it to 720p when output via HDMI to your TV. This is the biggest negative that I can think of. So far, I have been very pleased with my purchase.

Strengths: HDMI switching w/ upconverting; automatic speaker calibration; price for features.
Weaknesses: None
Overall Evaluation: I bought this receiver to allow HDMI inputs. Overall I think it's the best receiver at this price point for 2 HDMI inputs, full audio and video pass-through, and upconverting of other signals through the HDMI output. The automatic speaker calibration with the included microphone is also an outstanding feature. Very easy to use. Overall, an outstanding receiver!

Duration of ownership:
Strengths: great sound, autoconfigures with included setup mic
Weaknesses: Does not do HDMI to component conversion
Overall Evaluation: This is a rather good receiver and is easy to configure with many inputs and outputs. It receives audio over HDMI and has tons of options. My only disappointment was that it doesn't transmit video from the HDMI input to Component output. I have a projection HDTV from a couple of years ago which doesn't have HDMI but my Satellite Box does. So I figured I'd feed the receive the HDMI output from my Satellite Box and my TV would get the Component vid out from the receiver. After a couple of hours of trying to get it to work, I found the answer in the manual which says that its not doable in that way.

Strengths: Can easily customize it to suit almost any viewing or listening mode. Custom pre-sets eliminate typical adjustments for common modes.
Weaknesses: Manual is intimidating; but I have found that it needs to be very informative to cover all of the adjustments necessary to suit all the choices.
Overall Evaluation: This receiver is capable of 7.1 channel surround sound that is awsome. It is pushing my KEF 5.1 speakers plus 2 Kenwood floor speakers and the 250 W powered sub.

Strengths: audio over HDMI, Onkyo quality/sound
Weaknesses: few HDMI ports, suprisingly large & flimsy construction
Overall Evaluation: This is a great product as long as you've done your research and know what to expect. I'm not experiencing any of the sync issues that others reviews have mentioned. Also, be sure to update the firmware.
