Strengths: Great picture quality from high resolution sources, Ethernet capabilities, 64MB internal memory.

    Weaknesses: Big

Overall Evaluation: Better features than my older PhotoSmart 7960. It has slightly better print quality but color printing speeds are about the same. The 8450 can be networked via Ethernet connection and has a built in 64MB vice 16MB memory. This extra memory allows you to send multiple jobs to the printer's queue minimizing computer freeze up. Overall a great printer for amateur photo enthusiast.

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Good printing quality, easy installation, easy operation

Weaknesses: Slow speed in high resolution, ink expensive

Overall Evaluation: This printer is a very good one for printing photos. It's printing quality is very good at high resolution, however that is at the cost of slow speed. Operation is intuitive. The bundled software is very useful. Ink is expensive -- like other similar products.

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: memory card slots, improved lcd from previous model, printhead on cartridge

Weaknesses: No two sided duplex printing cartridge as well as a USB cable included in the retail box.

Overall Evaluation: More internal memory helps to manage photos quicker when using as a standalone. Great Price for this model according to its ability. Use the new Vivera inks because they last longer.

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Pict-bridge, memory card slots, decent lcd, printhead on cartridge.

Weaknesses: Larger than typical home inkjets, HP doesn't include usb cable, only a 7-ink printer, printhead on cartridge.

Overall Evaluation: First thing i noticed after opening the cardboard box was, wow, this is larger than what i had expected. Our previous inkjet printer was the HP 720c, it's circa 1998 yet it's noticably smaller. I guess the HP 72x series was a typical home inkjet, while the 8450 was originally marketed to the photo enthusiast crowd. The biggest reason we bought it was, it costed only $100 US at Staples on Black Friday 2005. Back in 1998 we spent over $200 on the 720c, and that was a good deal back then. So basically this is our modern day color printer, and for $100 i think we made the right buy. It does 4x6 and 5x7 photos, also borderless 8.5x11 color prints. I know, there are better enthusiast photo printers. But at what cost? Definitely not $100. The way i look at it is we bought a $100 printer that happens to do color photos better than other $100 printers. This printer is one of the last models to have the printhead on the ink cartridges, which is a good thing for consumers. But bad for HP, cost more to produce, etc. So HP will no doubt advertise against it, older tech, etc. But as mentioned in another online review, it's good for the consumer, because if the printhead clogs up, just buy a new cartridge and problem solved. The not so good thing about printhead on cartridges is that the whole cartridge moves when it's printing. Creating a somewhat rough shaking/vibrating force. Not a nice feeling when it's shaking your whole desk and monitor. And why doesn't HP include usb cables anyway? Did they forget to outsource these? Anyway, if you ask me, it's a great printer for pragmatists. Even if the colors aren't the most accurate. Because that's why you have photoshop in the first place, to get the end result you want from the tools you have.

Strengths: photo print quality, larfge LCD display

Weaknesses: high ink consumption and ink replacement will be costly (like all other photo printers!)

Overall Evaluation: I had an HP photosmart 145 small photo printer (prints on 4X6 photo) and was very happy with the quality of the photos so I decided to get another HP photo printer that will let me print bigger photos. setup was very easy. the printer and software are user friendly. it has a large LCD display and card slots so you can print directly from the memory card without a computer. other than ink cost (which I still haven't needed to replace) I am pretty pleased with this printer, photo quality is excellent

    Duration of ownership:3 Months

Strengths: Improved LCD screen, displays pictures faster & sharper. Accepts optional duplexer to print on both sides. Photo prints show greater detail compared to previous 7960. Fast printing. Network support.

Weaknesses: Still a large footprint, would like to see this improved. 4x6 photo prints via photo tray show "track" marks, same problem as 7960. Not too noticeable though.

Overall Evaluation: Improvements have been made compared to the previous model 7960. More internal memory helps to manage photos quicker when using as a standalone. Pricing has become more affordable on this model. It started out as $299 MSRP, then dropped shortly thereafter to $249. Also a $50 Rebate by purchasing a digital camera. New Vivera inks promise to last longer (don't buy generic ink). Online photo printing services are cheaper for 4x6, however convenience is nice. Does excellent borderless 8x10s for less cost than photo studio. This printer uses more power than previous models, however still quiet. Easy to use via printer. Software bloat might annoy some people.

Strengths: Network connectivity, photo print quality, 2.5" LCD display, ease of setup

Weaknesses: Inks and special photo paper (like most inkjets) will be costly to replace.

Overall Evaluation: Either text or photos the print quality is excellent! My pictures look like they're from a 35mm camera. This printer is VERY quiet. I replaced my Epson C84 with the HP8450 and it was an excellent decision. Much better build quality and features. Setup was simple with both my home desktop via USB cable and with my laptop via ethernet connection to my wireless LAN router. The software setup effortlessly through firewalls and it had no problem with my WPA encryption setups. On-printer picture management is also easy to navigate. One feature I really found neat was my ability to add an SD memory card into the printer and then access all the files on the card via my laptop or my desktop. This printer is highly recommended...

    Duration of ownership:2 Months

Strengths: This printer prints excellant quality photo prints. I've owned 3 HP photosmart printers and they have all out performed an Epson and Cannons that I've owned. The networking capability is great too.

Weaknesses: None that I can think of. A little bit bigger, but prints 8x10 prints and has two paper trays and memory card input slots so this does call for a bigger chasis.

Overall Evaluation: The price is great. The quality is top notch. Easy to use. Separate print tanks. Much lower price than the Cannon i9000 series I contemplated purchasing. Set up for Windows XP pro was a breeze. Communcation across my network with Window Media Center and Windows XP home operating systems on other pc's had no problems. I've had no problem with software glitches with my HP photsmart psc2510xi working on my network as well. (another great combo product & wirless). I totally recommned both units.

    Duration of ownership:2 Weeks

Strengths: Beautiful printing; decent speed (specs state 20 ppm for color printing); sharp-looking machine

Weaknesses: A smaller profile would have been preferred (the 8450 is a bit bigger than the 8150); inkjet cartridges -- always -- are pricey.

Overall Evaluation: I originally was thinking of picking up a printer to handle 4" X 6" prints. That thought lasted about 10 seconds, because it simply was not cost-effective to pay good money for a printer essentially limited to that function. Well worth the extra cash is a printer like this that, in addition to 4" X 6" photos, can handle 8" X 10" and other size photos and double as a back-up printer. And, although inkjet cartridges can be expensive, the photo printing at your local store is not always cheap (at least in terms of the printed image areas you receive). The photo printing quality of the HP Photosmart 8450 is superb, and prints at a nice speed. Supposedly the new Vivera inks add 15 to 20 years to the life of eight-color ink prints when used in conjunction with HP's new high-end Premium Plus photo paper. I have yet to use the HP Premium Plus photo paper, but if the durability with that photo paper product approximates the quality of the photos I've printed thus far, HP has a double-winner. The 8450 also performs marvelously as a back-up (non-photo) printer, so high marks there as well. Looks like HP has a winner here.
