Strengths: picture quality, simplicity, plenty of features
Weaknesses: would prefer more fine-grained zoom controls
Overall Evaluation: i was basically looking for a simple, low-cost DVD player that would give me a reasonable picture on my new Vizio 32" LCD TV (720p).originally, i'd been using my Xbox to watch DVDs and the picture was fairly dirty (using analog). when i got this player, i was thrilled with how great the picture was (using HDMI). it's so good that i'd say i can wait long enough for the Blu-ray vs HD-DVD to play itself out, or until PC TVs become a decent option.another great thing is this player also has coaxial out. this is useful to me since i have an older reciever that doesn't support HDMI. now i get to enjoy digital audio (DTS, Dolby) without having to buy a new receiver!the only thing i'd wish for this player is more fine-grained control over the picture zooming. in general this isn't really necessary, but for older DVDs with strange aspect ratios or with the subtitles burned onto the picture you may have to watch them with the vertical letterboxing. a small problem, but overall not very common.all in all, a perfect addition to my system. it was very affordable and easy to use. also, it didn't require me to buy a whole slew of new equipment to use it--only an HDMI cable which i was able to pick up for a few bucks off of ebay!

Strengths: HDMI Output with upconversion
Weaknesses: Broke within a week
Overall Evaluation: What the hell happened to Sony. 15 years ago I bought everything Sony and never had a problem now my last 3 things broke way too early (Digital Camera, DVD Video Cam, and now this DVD Player). The DVD Player worked fine for the first week and then suddenly the tray wouldn\\\'t open and the message said

Strengths: 1080P, good price for sony player
Weaknesses: Precision (but loud) drive
Overall Evaluation: great 1080P up-scaling, but not yet as good as DCDi by Faroudja. good for its price (less than $100) Sony's proprietary precision drive is very loud, loud enough to think the drive is scratching the DVD surface. The slow motion is very good in this player, My old up-scaling DVD player can't do slow motion back & forth like this player do. Don't forget to grab a HDMI v1.3 cable and a bag of popcorn before playing DVDs on this player

Strengths: Has both coaxial and optical audio outputs. One touch Play. Great upscaling ability.
Weaknesses: Not Divx compatible.light weight seems cheaply made.
Overall Evaluation: I needed a new dvd player and I came across the Sony DVP-NS77 player in the newspaper ad. Based on my past experience with Sony products I bought two players. One for the Living room and one for the bedroom. I have to say that I am very impressed with the output quality. It's real easy to set up and the remote works real well. It also allows you to do many things with my player from it. So in conclusion, I really have no major issues about this player. I look forward to many years of use. Thanks Sony!

Strengths: Sleek profile, 1080p upscaling, HDMI output, reads discs well.
Weaknesses: No SACD.
Overall Evaluation: This is a nice temporary purchase to service your new 1080p compatible HD TV until the Blu-Ray/HD-DVD wars are over. Makes your ordinary DVDs look VERY nice on a screen that can make the most of what 1080p upscaling offers. And yes, you can get it for at least $90. No, it's not the dream DVD player (but honestly the lack of SACD support is the only thing I genuinely miss), but a great value nonetheless.

Strengths: Easy setup to TV & Audio amp. Good picture quality.
Weaknesses: Little lengthy in loading disk, confusing manual with custom setup.
Overall Evaluation: DVD player was easy to connect to TV & audio unit. Used a HDMI to DVI cable and optical to audio unit. At first tried the custom setup and didn't get the sound through my Onkyo system. Picture quality was great but sound didn't play on all speakers. Tried quick setup and things worked much better. Would recommend product until the new DVD standards are hammered out. Wanted a multi disk player, but this will work for now.

Strengths: 1080p upscaling, price
Weaknesses: No HDMI cable included
Overall Evaluation: Good value for an upscaling DVD player until the HD DVD versus Blu Ray war is over. Effective stop gap for now as prices will fall and features will get better. This war may last another year or two so this is the best solution for now.

Strengths: Excellent picture quality. Precision Drive 3.
Weaknesses: Does everything you'd expect, but nothing more.
Overall Evaluation: I got this to replace a cheaper no-brand model that worked fine, but had problems playing labeled discs. The good news is that because of its Precision Drive 3 feature it plays most of everything that I could throw at it - including all the labelled DVDs I couldn't play before. The bad news is that I still had problems with labeled VCDs that were more than a few months old. The picture is what you would expect coming from Sony - crisp and clear. It also supports MP3s and jpegs. I am however unimpressed by its relatively sparse offerings. For example, it can't play mpg/avi files burnt on disc. It can't view ID3 tags in MP3s. It doesn't come with an HDMI cable. There are no multimedia or usb slots. Granted a lot of these features only appear on higher end machines, but it would have been nice if Sony was able to add a few more bells and whistles to sweeten the package. I had the ability to play mpgs on very cheap dvd-players so that's the one feature that I really miss. All told, it does what it says it does so if you can get it on sale (as I did :) ) I'd say go for it.

Strengths: Sleek, easy to set up, easy to use. Typical Sony--quality.
Weaknesses: None to speak of. It has fewer control buttons on the front than my older prog scan Sony, but I don't think I'll miss them!
Overall Evaluation: I bought this to replace my 4-yr old Sony progressive scan DVD player after purchasing a LCD 720p Toshiba TV. I was skeptical that there would be a big difference, but believe me there is! With the HDMI hookup this thing makes hair stubble on a man's chin look beautiful (and I don't like stubble)! I could practically count each hair! May sound silly, but really this upgrade was beyond worth it! Teamed with my Logitech surround sound system, I can barely lift my butt off the couch. It makes all the difference in the world. It walks you through the initial set-up to match your system. Very simple. As with all the Sony products I've owned, the remote is easy to use. It even has a 4x zoom feature! It is a sleek, beautiful thing too. Glossy black, understated buttons, and much thinner than my old one. One HDMI cord hookup is all you need. I didn't have any issue with the tray. Someone mentioned in another review that loading time is longer--but good God--what's a few seconds? Works like a charm!

Strengths: Picture quality (HDMI), ease of use.
Weaknesses: somewhat noisy transport, slower response
Overall Evaluation: This Sony DVD player has great picture quality, especially through the HDMI connection for 720P, 1080i, and 1080P. The set up menu is easy to navigate. However, since it is a low priced player, the tray makes a slight noise when loading and unloading the DVD disc. Also, it takes more than a 15 seconds after loading for the video to come up, which is very long waiting time, compared to other players.
