Duration of ownership:
Strengths: High def output is amazing. Bluray support. Still has software support for PS2 games.
Weaknesses: Game selection at this point. Must buy HDMI cable to maximize it's performance. No rumble in included controller.
Overall Evaluation: This game system is truly the next generation system. It's high def support is the perfect match for my new HDTV. The graphics from the games have been amazing. The graphics from Bluray discs are also amazing - depends on the movie. The upscaling capability with the new firmware for standard def DVD movies works more than adequately. It seems like everything looks good coming out of it. Of course you need to run everything through HDMI to maximize it's performance. You can buy a cheap HDMI cable from Monoprice and it will work beautifully. Of course, aethetically the system looks high tech. It does generate a lot of heat so make sure you give it good air flow. I don't have alot of games so far but Motorstorm and Heavenly Sword look stunning. The PS2 games I've tried have also worked. Can't wait till the new controller with rumble comes out. Also, I hope there will be a much bigger selection of good PS3 games soon or else it will not be able to compete with the other systems in the future.

Duration of ownership:
Strengths: Features, graphics, sound, power, blu-ray, wireless controllers
Weaknesses: Price. Only comes with composite video cable. Possibility of better/lower-priced PS3 configurations in the near future
Overall Evaluation: Sony tried to do too much with this machine, but to their credit they do a lot of it well. This is a powerful system capable of playing HD games, a full-featured Blu-Ray player capable of 1080p resolution and Dolby 7.1, with built-in wifi connection, and some integration with PSP.The downside is that developers may never be able to get the full potential out of this system until after its lifetime is over. Also there have been rumors of newer PS3's being released with TV-tuner cards and other features. Not to mention the rumors of more price cuts. Also, the blu-ray player only plays single-layer discs, so this player will not be able to play multi-layer discs if/when they become available/widespread (e.g. entire season of a TV series on 2 discs instead of 4.)I cannot comment on backward compatibility, since I have not tried to play any PS or PS2 games on this system yet (the 80 GB model does not have any HW support for backward compatibility.)I would not have bought the PS3 now if I didn't already have an HD TV capable of 1080p, already have 40 PS/PS2 games, and have a gift certificate which covered nearly 75% of the cost of the PS3 to a store where every other item is highly over priced. Finally, the PS3 only comes with a composite video cable, so expect to shell out another $75-$100 on a HDMI or component-video cables to get the full HD potential from this machine. It has a standard HDMI port in the back, but you'll have to buy a special cable if you want to use component video.Overall it's a good machine, and Motorstorm is a pretty fun game. With so much uncertainty of lower prices and/or new features, I would advise people to wait.
