    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Mac version imports from Windows files, integrates with Address Book

    Weaknesses: Extra steps

Overall Evaluation: Not a bad product. Installs very easily on a Mac. Looks almost identical to the PC version I used last year. The integration with Address Book surprised me and was a nice touch. (It asked me if I wanted to add my birthday, found in my W-2, to my profile in the Address Book.) There are a few too many extra steps in some parts of the interview. For example, they might say "Next we'll take you through blah blah blah" and make you click next. They could just get right to the interview question. Recommended product, though I would like to see it automatically compare a Roth vs Traditional IRA for you and make a suggestion on which to get.

    Strengths: Price

Weaknesses: Cannot use on a non-internet computer. Schedule D errors. Weak interview.

Overall Evaluation: I have used Taxcut ever since it was a Parsons product. But every year they have made it harder to use on a stand-alone non-internet computer. This year I found an error on how it handles schedule D capital gains. And I paid for but could not use the state product. The interview did not catch everything it should have. I am very disappointed, and when I called for help they did not care and told me to apply for the 60 day refund. Nice.

    Duration of ownership:7 Days

Strengths: Easy, inexpensive, backed up by H&R Block

Weaknesses: Only import last years tax not prior year--it got confused with TaxCut 2003 (last time I used TaxCut)

Overall Evaluation: This product worked quickly upon set up. Although it imported my 2003 return and labeled it 2006 which caused some other difficulties, it was very clear, and helpful. The mini movies that described some of the issues were very helpful. The corrections part was a little confusing but I managed and there was only 2 corrections needed. I wish I could have deleted the 2003 return but it seems too difficult and so I have to submit a signed form to accompany my e-file. I take the blame. Overall it was simple and straight forward.

    Strengths: none

Weaknesses: the info is not clear

Overall Evaluation: I have used turbotax in the past and it is much better. I find it difficult to move through this program or find what I am looking for. It just doesn't work smoothly and the result is that I still haven't finished my taxes. My frustration mounts every time I open this program. In addition, every comment seems to come with a commercial for another of their products.

Strengths: Consistent interface throughout iterations. Very helpful wizards to walk you through forms. CD automatically sent to you each year. Fast, efficient, thorough.

Weaknesses: Interface is a little behind the times.

Overall Evaluation: I started using Taxcut about 5 years ago. I tried TurboTax, but I liked the wizards and walkthroughs more in Taxcut. Seemless import of tax info from year to year cuts down on entering repetitive data. Easy to make changes and navigate the interface. Seemless integration of state program and e-filing. Great product.

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: Imports data from prior year (even from TurboTax), can print return to PDF

Weaknesses: Keeps getting more expensive, especially to e-file

Overall Evaluation: I have used TaxCut for as long as I can remember and this year's version is a natural progression from prior years. The interface has changed slightly, but there is no real learning curve for previous users. A nice feature is the ability to print your returns to a PDF file. This way, you can keep and access an electronic copy of your return without having to keep the old software around. Of course, you could accomplish the same thing by downloading one of the free PDF writers (eg CutePDF). In my opinion, all tax software should do pretty much the same thing - so my main criteria is price. While it is a little cheaper than TurboTax, the price has been creeping up each year as rebates that had been offered in prior years have been eliminated (e.g. e-filing). I was not going to e-file this year but Office Depot had a great deal (might have been a price mistake) back in January. Had I not found the deal, I would have considered TaxAct. Also note, the online version of TaxCut Federal + State + E-file is available for around $30 through various partners (e.g. Amex, Bank of America).

    Duration of ownership:2 Weeks

Strengths: Easy to install. Cheaper than using a Tax Professional. Very user friendly. No SpyWare like some other products did a couple years ago.

Weaknesses: Prices have been going up gradually over the years. They also keep raising the e-file fees

Overall Evaluation: I have been using TaxCut since the year they came out with it. Its cheaper than TurboTax and just as good. I have been very happy over the years with the software. It always seamlessly import my data from prior year's (it even imported from TurboTax years ago) files. It is very easy to use the software. Except the rising prices of the software and the e-file fees, I have no complaints against this product.

    Duration of ownership:

Strengths: easy to use, imports tax data from previous year, includes one state and e-file

    Weaknesses: non

Overall Evaluation: This version of TaxCut includes one state download and one e-file (federal and state) for free. Additional e-filing will cost you. This year's program is as easy to use as 2006 version. You get video tips, a comprehensive help menu and one free call for "tax advice from an H&R Block tax professional".I use this version of TaxCut since my filing includes home mortgage deduction and investments. If you donated items during the tax year, TaxCut will help you determine the fair market value.Overall, I've used TaxCut for the last 5 years and have been happy with the value I get, compared to TurboTax (which I used the first 2 years). E-filing is the way to go, with faster access to the money I lent the government for free. With e-filing you can designate a checking account and the IRS will do an electronic deposit to your account. On average it takes about 1 month after filing.

    Duration of ownership:2 Years

Strengths: singnificant improvement in terms of usability - even compared to last year

Weaknesses: doesn't permit direct input to individual tax forms

Overall Evaluation: TaxCut interview is much more smooth flowing compared to previous versions. It is definitely on par with TurboTax on most counts - to top it off, Block also offers a free consultation with one of their Tax Professionals - this could be huge bargain if you have unanswered questions.

    Duration of ownership:1 Weeks

Strengths: Best value for the money ($60 from Amazon and got $10 rebate from TaxCut). Comes with eFile, so no hidden costs.

Weaknesses: Does Not Import W-2, 1098 and 1099 Data like the other guys. Well, not yet, but give them time!

Overall Evaluation: I was a loyal TurboTax customer until last year. TaxCut has virtually the same features and functionality at a lower cost. Also, have not run into some of the installation issues I experienced with TurboTax in years past. TaxCut also comes with free access to an H&R Block tax advisor.
