Overall Rating: 5 Star Review
Duration of ownership:6 Months
Strengths: height adjustment, swivel, excellent brightness, contrast ratio is more than specified (PCmagazine), lots of USB's, attractive, VGA and DVI cables included
Weaknesses: Dell customer service
Overall Evaluation: I love this monitor. No dead pixel. Great sharpness and brightness. Too bright at default but can be adjusted. It is almost perfect for normal computer use. The picture is excellent for gaming and videos, however, for those who looks for the ultimate experience in gaming and watching movies, a larger screen size might be better.

Duration of ownership:
Strengths: Completely adjustable in any direction.Very nice colors.Simple, easy-to-use interface.DVI and VGA compatible
Weaknesses: None that I know of!
Overall Evaluation: When I was first looking around the web for a good affordable LCD monitor, I focused on the well-known Samsung and ViewSonic brands and almost refused to consider a Dell monitor because "it's just not what they do best" or so I thought. Well, I'm glad I payed attention to all the good reviews because this LCD monitor is sooooo cool! You can adjust it in any direction imaginable, even turn it into a vertical set-up great for Word processing, and pivot it easily to get the best viewing angle. The interface is simple and takes very little space, which maximizes the viewing area. The colors are superb and the response time is one of the best in the market. I highly recommend this product to anyone who is looking for a great LCD that doesn't cost a fortune!

Strengths: Great features - telescopic stand with good adjustments and you can use it in portrait mode as well.
Weaknesses: Black level is absolutely below usable level when working in dark room and backlight is "leaking" through the top and the bottom of the screen.
Overall Evaluation: I was using two earlier models, 1703FP, in dual screen mode for about three years and I was very happy with them. Recently, one of them died and I decided to buy something that will match not just performance but also appearance to be able to keep my dual screen setup. I purchased 1704FP as it is, or so I thought, practically identical model. How surprised I was when I turned it ON. Having two monitors side by side, I could not believe how poor is the black level. Black does not exist and no adjustments can compensate for it. Even on own test screen, with signal cable disconnected, there is no black (only dark gray) and what is worse, top and the bottom of the screen is glowing with the backlight "leaking" from the back. I have seen it on many Dell's laptops. Dell sent the replacement within a week but this one is even worse. After endless hours with tech support and customer service (completely incompetent) I returned both units for credit. Still waiting to see that credit on my CC.

Strengths: Hard-to-beat price; bright, well-focused images; attractive, ergonomically correct design.
Weaknesses: Viewing angle specs should be taken with a grain of salt.
Overall Evaluation: Originally, I had intended to use my four-year-old NEC MultiSync FE700+ monitor as part of the new Dell 4700 system I ordered last June. It looked fine and it still seemed so new, though its bulk crowded my small computer desk. But I told myself "Four years in the computer world is pretty old, man!" Then, when my employer upgraded our office computers from CRT to LCD, I became hooked on compact, flicker-free, flat panel displays. With Dell offering all manner of specials on their various LCDs, it suddenly made sense to include a new monitor as part of my recent computer purchase. A special note regarding Dell's model designations: This 1704 FPT serves as an upgrade as part of new Dell systems. On Dell's accessory web page, you'll find a similar 1704 FPV. After much research, I determined that the only difference is that the FPT has a somewhat narrower viewing angle in exchange for a quicker response time than the FPV.

Strengths: Great black/gray contrast.
Weaknesses: None at all
Overall Evaluation: This is one of the best monitors I've used. I also own Dell's 1905 FPT and they are both wonderful. When you have this one at home, the CRT sitting on your desk at work makes you feel like you work in the stone-age. Black and gray tones are great. The flicker-free image will give you less headaches, especially if you spend hours on the computer like me. The viewing angle is acceptable....I would say it's very close to 90 degrees. The height adjustable stand is easy to raise and pivot. This is one solid LCD!!!!

Strengths: Sharp. 4 USB ports
Weaknesses: Viewing angle is more like 90 degrees.
Overall Evaluation: 1280x1024 native resolution matches the 5:4 aspect ratio of the screen.Text can be small for some (similar to 1024x768 on a 15"CRT). Change the resolution to make the text bigger and it isn't quite as sharp.Vivid colors. 12ms

Weaknesses: None
Overall Evaluation: Very good monitor. Simply just mind-blowing! My first lcd, and best of all NO DEAD PIXELS!!! Just love it! This is one great monitor! I play a lot of games like CS and BF 2 and this thing performs beautifully! The 12ms response time is what made me switch from CRT, and the saved deskspace is great too!
