Quanta Computer, the world's largest contract laptop computer maker, shipped an all-time high 4 million laptops in October, a sign some parts of the technology industry remain shielded from the global financial crisis.

The Taiwanese company, which counts Sony, Dell and Hewlett-Packard among its customers, said strong inventory building ahead of the holidays, and demand for netbooks, helped boost shipments in October.

"October is normally one of the strongest months of the year for us," a Quanta representative said.

The company's previous record, which was set last November but also reached twice this year, was 3.3 million units in a single month. The 4 million figure is also a 21 percent jump over the 3.3 million units Quanta shipped in September.

Quanta also manufactures the XO laptop for the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) association, but does not include those shipments in its monthly tallies.
