Battlefront Reveals New Expansion for Combat Mission: Shock Force

The Combat Mission wargames are sui generis, the sort of hyper-realistic computer simulations that go where consoles fear to tread. Imagine what the U.S. military might pull together if it wanted to simulate battles between companies on up to battalions. Like that, except on your home computer for thirty or forty bucks. If you know what Advanced Squad Leader is, think of Combat Mission as ASL-plus. If on the other hand your idea of a wargame is Dawn of War or Company of Heroes, these games probably aren't for you.

Last year the guys at Battlefront took the series in a bold if controversial direction with Combat Mission: Shock Force, a shot at simulating asymmetric modern warfare in Syria. The game was stacked to the hilt with astonishingly accurate physical and ballistic-based representations of everything from the U.S. M1126 Stryker ICV to the Syrian-by-way-of-Russia SVD Dragunov. Unfortunately CM:SF shipped with some serious A.I. bugs and all kinds of persnickety performance glitches that made the game run like a celluloid reel hitched in a film projector.

One expansion and 10 patches later (an eleventh is incoming) they're go for a second module, dubbed Combat Mission: British Forces, on sale "whenever it's ready" for $25.

Says Battlefront's "thrilled to announce" PR rep:

Britain fields one of the most powerful armed forces in the world today, which Combat Mission fans will soon experience for themselves. The full range of British weaponry is brought to life with the same amazing level of detail found in the previous Combat Mission titles.

Everything from the new version of the L85A2 rifle to the Challenger 2 with all the latest upgrades is included in order to give a full accounting of the capabilities of the modern British Army. Play with them on their own or as part of multi-national joint task forces using any of Shock Forces' other units. As with the MARINES Module, all new scenarios and a campaign are included for exciting play right out of the box, before digging in and using the powerful editor or sharing scenarios with other Shock Force gamers. New voices (multiple accents), sound effects, and game features round out the game experience. Oh, and of course some great surprises which will be revealed as the release date nears!
