A trial version of one of the most awaited games of this year, "Final Fantasy XIII," became available on Thursday in Japan.

The Square Enix title for the PlayStation 3 isn't due to be launched until later this year but a trial version of the game was bundled with the Blu-ray Disc containing the Final Fantasy Seven movie that went on sale Thursday in Japan.

During the last week Sony has been promoting Thursday's launch. Posters adorn the outside of the Sony Building, its showroom in Tokyo's Ginza district, and inside sits a big and detailed model of Midgar, the capital of the fictional world of Gaia in which Final Fantasy Seven is set.

Square Enix first announced Final Fantasy XIII in May 2006, and plans to release it by the end of this year. That means there's a chance it could make an appearance at the Tokyo Game Show in September.

The game is scheduled for launch overseas on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 but not until 2010. And bad news for fans of the franchise outside of Japan: the version offered from Thursday is for Japanese PlayStation 3 consoles only.
