I initially learned that the government was buying some people cellphones from a TV ad a few months ago. As is almost always the case, it's possible to argue this issue from two directions. First, of course, is the perspective that telecommunications is essential in our society and certainly one of the keys to public safety. Cellphones are the new phones and everyone should have one. The other, of course, is that we need to draw the line somewhere as to who gets what when the funding comes from tax dollars, and one could make the argument that food, yes, absolutely; clothing, you bet; shelter, sure, in some cases, on a temporary basis, but a phone? Should we be giving away cell phones and service, especially when the prices of cellular and other telecommunications are already boosted by healthly percentage by gobs of taxes?
